Six Flags rivals Disney as the best-known name in the U.S. theme park business. The company runs 28 amusement parks in the United States, including 15 of the nation＊s largest, plus parks in Canada and Mexico. With 98 percent of U.S. residents within an eight-hour drive of a Six Flags park, there＊s probably at least one of their amusement parks, water parks or animal parks not far from your doorstep or next vacation destination.

AMUSEMENT PARKS

Among Six Flags＊ biggest draws are its strong selection of thrill rides. According to the company, Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles holds the Guinness World Record for the most roller coasters in a single park. It set the bar high in 2003 when the park＊s 16th roller coaster, Scream, opened. Riders＊ legs dangle as trains race at up to 65 miles per hour through seven 360-degree loops.

The park＊s other 15 coasters include Colossus, the tallest and fastest wooden one in the western United States; Flashback, the first one with a hairpin drop; Psyclone, a replica of New York＊s legendary Coney Island Cyclone; Revolution, the first with full 360 degree loops; The Riddler＊s Revenge, the world＊s tallest and fastest coaster that＊s ridden standing up; Viper, the world＊s largest looping roller coaster; Batman The Ride; Superman the Escape; and X, with its vehicles that twist backward, forward, 360 degrees around.

Understandably, Six Flags Magic Mountain is one of the chain＊s most popular parks. But not its largest. Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J., takes that title, recognized by Guinness as the world＊s largest regional theme park. Among its more than 70 mechanized rides are 13 roller coasters, including the addition of what it advertises as the tallest, fastest coaster on Earth, Kingda Ka. For those living or planning a trip between the U.S. coasts, other Six Flags parks offer their own thrills. 

COLORADO: Six Flags Elitch Gardens in Denver takes visitors to the Mile-High City even higher on coasters such as Halfpipe, where riders share a giant snowboard carving its way up and down a 10-story-tall half-pipe, and the Flying Coaster, which offers unobstructed views of downtown and the Rockies, if you＊re not too distracted by the whooshing sound in your ears to notice!

GEORGIA: Atlanta＊s Six Flags over Georgia features the South＊s first flying coaster, Superman 每 Ultimate Flight, and the Southeast＊s tallest and fastest stand-up coaster, the Georgia Scorcher. 

ILLINOIS: Six Flags Great America outside Chicago has nearly seven miles of roller coaster track, split up into such rides as another Superman 每 Ultimate Flight and DejaVu, a ※boomerang§ coaster, meaning riders fly through the course both forward and backward. 

KENTUCKY: Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville boasts of a coaster that ※shattered five world records,§ Chang, and North America＊s first suspended looping coaster, T2 每 Terror to the Second Power.

LOUISIANA: At Six Flags New Orleans, visitors can choose whether to side with good or evil by riding what the park calls its signature coaster, Batman The Ride, or the corkscrewing, spiraling, looping Jester. 

MARYLAND: Six Flags America in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., area features another ride from the bat family: Batwing. The high-flying coaster is designed to give riders the feeling of free flight. Another of its recommendations is Superman 每 Ride of Steel with a 200-foot drop at speeds up to 70 mph.

MASSACHUSETTS: Springfield＊s Six Flags New England also includes Superman 每 Ride of Steel, as well as yet another bat ride. Batman 每 The Dark Knight＊s floorless train resembling a flying chair races through five bank turns, two corkscrews and three loops. Plus, Mr. Six＊s Pandemonium provides a different experience with each ride, as its cars with face-to-face seating spin like tops while riding the track.

MISSOURI: Six Flags St. Louis features one of the country＊s top 5 wooden coasters, The Boss. Batman 每 The Ride makes an appearance, and Mr. Freeze uses electromagnetic current to propel passengers to 70 mph in about 4 seconds.

TEXAS: Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington is home to Batman 每 The Ride, Mr. Freeze and a different Superman ride, Superman 每 Tower of Power. Riders rocket up one of three 325-foot towers and are dropped to the bottom in a stomach-churning free fall. San Antonio＊s Six Flags Fiesta Texas adds another thrill to the Superman line with the Superman Krypton Coaster, which the park boasts as the largest steel and only floorless coaster in the Southwest. And if you can stomach more, the horrifying Poltergeist launches riders up to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston adds to the Batman universe with Batman 每 The Escape, a standing coaster that pushes passengers through 360-degree vertical and horizontal loops. The park also has a wooden coaster, Texas Cyclone, a taller and faster innovation based on the Coney Island classic.

NEW YORK: Six Flags Darien Lake near Buffalo is home to coasters including Superman Ride of Steel, one of the tallest in the Northeast, and The Mind Eraser, the only suspended looping coaster in the state. The Great Escape in Lake George began life in 1954 as Storytown USA but hasn＊t stood still. Its family fun includes the Canyon Blaster, a mine train roller coaster, and Alpine Bobsled, unique in New York state.   

OKLAHOMA: At Frontier City in Oklahoma City, Silver Bullet shoots riders through a looping coaster, while Diamond Back passengers ride a breathtaking loop both forward and backward.

The parks offer far more than coasters, of course. In addition to superheroes such as Batman and Superman, Looney Tunes characters also have a home at Six Flags. 

At Los Angeles＊ Magic Mountain, for example, Bugs Bunny World offers 17 rides and other attractions for the family, and Daffy＊s Adventure Tours can provide a wild ride. Other stars also share the spotlight. At New Jersey＊s Great Adventure, for instance, you can share your time with SpongeBob SquarePants, who is featured in a 3-D motion simulator ride, and master illusionist Harry Houdini, whose spirit may join visitors on a theatrical ride experience.

Thrills also come wet and wild. At Great Adventure, you can cool off on water rides including the whitewater rafting of Congo Rapids; a plunge over a 60-foot waterfall on Movietown Water Effect; the flowing water flume ride Saw Mill Log Flume; and a splash down a 40-foot-high chute on Poland Springs Plunge.

Plus, all ages enjoy stunt shows and animal shows performed year-round.

To supplement every-day offerings, the parks also hold special events. Concerts and theme days dot the calendar as do themed events for holidays such as Halloween. And for those willing to pony up even more than the entry fee, some Six Flags parks provide additional rides for additional charge. Eruption provides the experience of total weightlessness by launching riders into the air at 50 mph on rotating seats. Alcatraz the Ride immerses riders in a flight on which they control direction, speed and altitude.

And a few parks take on a special focus. American Adventures in Georgia, for example, carves out its own niche by featuring rides for families with children under age 12, such as bumper cars, Tea Cup Twirl and a swinging ship. Internationally, travelers can experience Canada＊s La Ronde in Montreal, Quebec, or head south for Six Flags Mexico in Mexico City.

WATER PARKS

Six Flags＊ 20 water parks include Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in New Jersey, the largest in the nation. Some are within Six Flags thrill parks and included with their admission, such as Wild Waves & Enchanted Village in Seattle. Others are parks that stand on their own.

CALIFORNIA: Six Flags Hurricane Harbor neighbors Magic Mountain in Los Angeles and features more than 23 rides and attractions including water slides, a wave pool and a lazy river. Visitors to northern California have two more water-related parks to choose from in the Waterworld parks in Concord and Sacramento.

GEORGIA: At Six Flags White Water in Atlanta, the biggest thrills are the Cliffhanger, one of the tallest freefalls in the world, and Tornado, in which riders slide around and down a 132-foot-long funnel.

ILLINOIS: Admission to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor is included with admission to Six Flags Great America near Chicago, offering an adventure river, a 500,000-gallon wave pool, 25 water slides and a family raft ride in an atmosphere like a Caribbean island.

Other possibilities include Splashwater Kingdom in Lake George, New York; Wyandot Lake in Columbus, Ohio; White Water Bay in Oklahoma City; and the Texas twosome of Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Arlington and Six Flags SplashTown in Houston.

ANIMAL PARKS

The 350-acre wildlife preserve at Six Flags Wild Safari (next to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J.) is the largest drive-through safari outside Africa and the animals can walk right up to your vehicle. Species that make Wild Safari their home include zebras, baboons, giraffes, kangaroos, hippos, lions and bears. 

As if having its own safari land next door wasn＊t enough, Great Adventure has its own tiger exhibit as part of its jungle section, The Golden Kingdom. Bengal tigers and rare ＆golden＊ tiger cubs are featured, and other exotic animals can be seen throughout the kingdom. 

Six Flags Marine World combines a theme park, oceanarium and land-animal park on its 136-acre site north of San Francisco. The park features 33 animal attractions, ten live shows and rides for all ages. Marine World is home to approximately 3,000 animals of 300 species such as lions, tigers, sharks and white elephants. Dolphin Encounter allows visitors touch, train, feed and play with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.
