Ahhh!  The Caribbean.  A sea full of tropical island paradises like the Bahamas and Jamaica.  But before you book a trip to one of those delightful places take a look at the island of St. Kitts.  The island may be tiny, but it is full from coast to coast of things to do while you visit.  Whether you like land or water, there's something for everyone.

BEACHES

What's a Caribbean island without beaches?  I can guarantee that beach lovers will not be disappointed.  No one beach is like the other.  On the north side of the beach, the volcanoes have helped to create black or gray sand beaches.  On the south side, the beaches are white sand, in more abundance, easily accessed, and more popular.  If you like to be highly active while at the beach, than you might want to head to the south tip of the island where Turtle Beach is located.  There you'll find plenty of water and beach sports to participate in and a nice bar and restaurant to relax in later.  For a more relaxing and romantic getaway, head a bit east to Sand (Sandy) Bank Beach.  It is fairly isolated and good for quiet walks on the beach or a dip in the Atlantic.  Yet, the most popular beach is the Frigate Bay Beach.  It's ideal for families because it has a variety of activities for both the young (or young at heart) and those a bit more mature.  It runs from the north to south and has plenty of bars and restaurants on each end.  Water sports like windsurfing, bodysurfing, and water skiing are very popular.

SCUBA DIVING, DEEP-SEA FISHING, AND BOATING

For those who want to venture further out into the deep blue, there are breathtakingly beautiful places to dive.  St. Kitts boasts waters full of reefs, wrecks, caves, and other wildlife.   Visiting some sites depends on your skills as a diver. Nag's Head is a rock formation at the southern end of the island.  It's recommended that only experienced divers attempt to dive in this location.  Those who have the skills can enjoy the exotic fish both in the day and night.  Coconut Tree Reef is the place for both experienced and beginners.  It has fairly shallow areas for the beginners and then a drop-off where the more experienced can swim.  Now keep in mind that there are as many dive sites as there are beaches so do your homework.

Dives can be booked through either your hotel or independent contractors around the island.

Adventurers that prefer to be on the water and not in it can take advantage of the boating activities that St. Kitts has to offer.  Deep-sea fisherman will enjoy the variety of fish that swim around the island.  The warm waters offer wahoo, tuna, kingfish, marlin, barracuda, and dorado.  Some fish are seasonal so if there's a particular fish that you want find out what season it usually appears in and plan your trip around that time of the year.

If you're more into pleasure cruises, there are plenty of those as well.  You can take guided cruises to visit other parts of the island as well as neighboring islands that surround St. Kitts.  If you have a need for speed, try booking a cruise on a catamaran for the day.  These vessels and any other boat that you may require can be chartered through your hotel or other independent charter companies around the area.

LAND ACTIVITIES

Some of us in this world do not really care for beaches and various forms of land activities and all the aforementioned activities bore us nearly to death.  Don't worry.  There are plenty of activities for those who prefer to be farther inland such as nature walks, mountain climbing, shopping, and historical sites.

NATURE

During the day, anyone can find a guided tour, whether by foot or motorized vehicle, to various parts of the island.  One popular place to visit is Mt. Liamuiga, a dormant 3,792 foot high volcano.  On this mountain is a large fresh water crater lake and "the Crater," a mile wide crater filled with wild vegetation.  Further inland is another crater lake, Dos D'ane Pond.

St. Kitts is also home to exotic flora and fauna and medicinal plants.

HISTORICAL SITES

If the ecosystem doesn't quite excite you, take advantage of St. Kitts' colonial history.  There are forts, factories, plantations, churches, memorials, and other sites to visit.  Most of these sites are in Basseterre, the capital and largest city of St. Kitts.  The most popular sites in the city to visit seem to be the Old Treasury Building, the St. George Anglican Church, and Independence Square.  Of course there are other sites well away from the Basseterre like the Brimstone Hill Fortress which was used mainly in the 18th century.
