All roads lead to Rome.  The advantage for the tourist is that those same roads can take you on day trips from Rome to near-by attractions that will bring to you the history and culture of Italian civilization both ancient and modern.

One of those roads will take you to the pre-Roman days of the Etruscans.  From Rome take the road north along the Mediterranean towards Civitavecchia.  Travel a little further until you reach Tarquinia.  Near this ancient city you will find the painted tombs of the Etruscans who ruled Rome before the founding of the Roman Republic.  Great traders, the Etruscans were part of a network of ancient trading cities that included the Phoenicians.  The trip can easily be done in a day but it does take some time to get there - time well spent.

Excavation of the Etruscan tombs has been going on for centuries and they are best seen with one of the local guides who will give you some of their history.  If you're lucky, the guide might take you - with appropriate warning to the ladies - to those tombs with wall paintings that tend more to the x-rated.  On the way back to Rome you can stop for a meal in Civitavecchia, one of Italy's busy ports and a port of departure for many of Europe's Mediterranean destinations.

 Another of Italy's ports you should see is the one near Rome that's no longer a port.  This is Ostia Antica, the port of ancient Rome.  Leave your car at the hotel or on the street near your pensione and take the train to Ostia.  The ruins of the old port will give you a sense of how the people lived and worked in ancient times.  Ostia Antica will easily give you a day's worth of excursions through the remains of the houses and workshops and stores of the people who fed and clothed and provided for their more famous neighbor.  

You will find more upscale accommodations on the other side of Rome as you travel to Tivoli.  Here you will find the Villa of the Emperor Hadrian, which was built in 134 AD.  It was the Emperor's residence when he was in Rome and it is a remarkable image of the splendor of ancient Roman civilization.  The Villa itself is one of the best-preserved examples of the life of the aristocracy that has survived into our own time.  The Villa's water gardens are modeled on similar gardens throughout the ancient world.

Nearby in Tivoli you will also find Villa d'Este that was built in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, the son of Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso d'Este.  Again water becomes the central focus for this lavish example of Renaissance architecture and garden design.  Bring your walking shoes to tour this terraced garden that is still one of the most admired in the world.

After your day trips to Tarquinia or Ostia Antica or Villa d'Este, you may want a more relaxed excursion - but still one of interest.  Your answer may be a trip to Frascati, one of the cities in the Roman Hills just south of the city.  You can take your time to visit the churches of the city and enjoy the gardens of the Villa Aldobrandini.  But your reason for the trip to Frascati is to enjoy the food and to taste the city's gift to the world of wine, the local Frascati wine.  This is an exceptional white wine that you can find in many places around the world, but nothing compares to trying it in the city of its origin.  If you're in the area in October, you can try the wine during their annual wine festival.

They say Rome wasn't built in a day.  True enough.  But a day's trip from the Eternal City can provide an exceptional experience that will vie with the images of Rome itself in your memories.
