There are many cups and mugs that are ideal for winter camping. It is safe to say that most are made for holding warm beverages of some sort during the cold days of winter.
Since the majority of winter camping involves packing and possibly some rough and tumble types of activities, the major requirement of the winter mug or cup is that it be tough. In other words it must not be fragile or dainty in the least. If the utensil shows any spot of weakness this will show up early as a broken useless cup or mug.
There exist many designs and materials for winter camping mugs and cups. Some are quite large, others are quite tiny, but they all serve a purpose or function involving winter camping. They should be tough enough to be placed directly into a campfire or camp stove/oven. These outdoor utensils should be expected to keep hot things hot and cold things cold. Most of these available on the market are capable of doing these functions quite easily.
One of the materials that camping mugs are made of is aluminum. These are fine winter camping utensils. They are easy to wash. They also fight rust. Food or soup or other things put in these aluminum vessels do not stubbornly stick to the surface as other materials. The aluminum can be shiny bright or brushed aluminum. And of course some aluminum cups and mugs are colored or have enamel baked-on finishes.
Campers should not have to worry about damaging their utensils while heating or cooling something to eat or drink. Aluminum is perfect for this but could melt if put directly into a campfire. There are ceramic or enamel baked metal cups or mugs that can be placed directly into a campfire.
An important consideration involving winter camping mugs and cups is cost. They get dented chipped or cracked sooner than later so they usually do not cost much. In other words they are easily and cheaply replaced. This is done pretty often. There are some very inexpensive thin plastic or Styrofoam cups that are ideal for one use and then disposal.
Some camping mugs are as large as soup bowls and can be used for that purpose. A large warm mug of soup or chili is very satisfying after a day of hiking or skiing on cold winter days.
There is available a two ounce aluminum cup that comes complete with a small cast aluminum coffee boiler about the size of a fist. It is an ingenious little contraption that is paced right on the heat source and makes approximately one little cup of strong good tasting coffee. These nifty little gadgets can be found at most sporting good stores.
Even though these utensils are utilitarian in design, some are actually pretty fancy. They can come in many colors and shapes. There are mugs with homey quotes placed on them. Some have fishing or hunting jokes blazoned on.
To sum up, the ideal winter camping mug or cup should be made of a strong metal material that food or beverages will not stick to. They should have good secure handles so that a person does not run the risk of burns. These utensils should be light and easy to pack. They also should be inexpensive and easily replaceable. Some prefer them to have some sort of design or theme that is satisfying to the eye. Others prefer plain utensils that are considered just another piece of camping gear.
