Of the Caribbean islands, Cuba is the largest. Due to a variety of complex factors, it is also one of the least commercialized of Caribbean destinations, making it a fascinating place to visit. For those who appreciate history, art, literature and other cultural pursuits, as well as naturalists and those who favor music and nightlife, Cuba is a destination that will not disappoint.
A nation rich in culture and history, Cuba has for centuries excited the imaginations of great thinkers and adventurers. The historic structures and sites that still remain are a testament to just a few of the great people who have passed through this small nation.
Havana, its colonial center declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, is the largest city in the Caribbean. Great attention has been given to the precise restoration of many of the oldest buildings, making a tour of the area an experience that will not be forgotten. With 500 years of history to draw upon, Havana offers a wonderful display of historic sites, including fine examples of old Spanish architecture, beautiful cathedrals, colonial structures, plazas, and so much more. Best explored by foot, on your own or with one of the many guided tours readily available, Havana also has numerous museums and art galleries.
There are four main plazas -- the Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Francisco, Plaza Vieja, and the Plaza de Catedral, which is the best preserved of the four. In addition to the variety of remarkable colonial era buildings, there are many sights of interest to be seen from the plazas.
These include El Templete, the Little Temple, a neoclassic building in which can be seen a fresco by Jean-Baptiste Vermany that depicts the formal founding of the city of Havana in 1519. There is also the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, which was among the largest colonial buildings of the era. For 176 years it was the home of the colonial government and now houses the city¡¯s museum. Another fascinating sight is the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, the second oldest Spanish fortress in this part of the world. This venerable structure is surrounded by a moat and now houses the Museo de las Ceramica Artistica, featuring pieces by the renowned sculptors Rene Portocarrero and Wilfredo Lam. La Catedral de la Habana is one of the finest examples of 18th century baroque beauty in all of Latin America.
Santiago de Cuba is the island¡¯s second largest city. The famed Hernan Cortes was its first mayor and the city is home to Cuba¡¯s oldest palaces and museums, including the Casa de Diego Velazquez, located in the Parque Cespedes area. The town of Trinidad is said to be one of the best restored colonial centers in Latin America and is well worth a visit.
Matanzas, often referred to as the Athens of Cuba for its reputation as a center for artists and poets, is notable for its beauty and atmosphere. Each of its twelve bridges give a beautiful view of the surrounding area, which includes a variety of interesting monuments and buildings, in addition to the natural beauty of the land itself. Situated near some of the most memorable beaches in Cuba, Matanzas is a place to remember.
As an island nation, Cuba is graced with more than 300 beaches, virtually guaranteeing that the traveler will find a beach location to his taste, whether it be the classic pristine white sands of the Caribbean style escape, as can be found in Varadero, or the rugged natural wonders to be found at the many places that are not commercialized. Some of the finest are to be found just outside of Trinidad.
Beaches, however, are not all Cuba has to offer the traveler with an eye for nature¡¯s beauty. In Pinar Del Rio Province, there are two UNESCO biosphere reserves, with part of the protected area including one of the best hiking experiences to be found in Cuba ¨C the Cordillera de Guaniguancio. Eco-tourism is an important part of the Cuba travel experience, with several resorts, including the Hotel Moka, Los Jasmines and Cayo Levisa of Pinar Del Rio Province, specializing in such travel. Pinar Del Rio Province also has a wealth of underground caves for exploration and is an excellent place for fresh water diving. For those who prefer salt water diving, Maria La Gorda is the place to go, offering an underwater experience that is unparalleled.
A journey to Cuba would not be complete without sampling its restaurants and music. Restaurants tend to be of two sorts ¨C those run by the government, which cater primarily to tourists, and those that are run by and for locals.
At Caf¨¦ Taberna, located in the Juan Bautista Tavern on the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, excellent local cuisine is available. In addition to fine food at reasonable, even inexpensive prices, each day from 11am to closing there is live music, with one of three regular bands playing traditional Cuban songs from the 1940¡¯s and 1950¡¯s.
Also in Havana, at Calle Concordia, No. 418, is La Guardia. At this restaurant, on the third floor of an 18th century townhouse, the food is excellent and inexpensive. A well-known and beloved dining spot, it is an experience that should not be missed.
The Tocororo in Miramar is known as being one of the favorite eating spots of the famed writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez. An interesting selection of local foods as well as vegetarian options for those who do not eat meat make this restaurant stand out from the rest.
Live music is an important part of the Cuban nightlife. The Cartelera, a local free weekly paper, will help the traveler to select a nightclub by type of music and atmosphere desired. In addition to the various types of traditional Cuban music, there are dance clubs and discos, and diverse musical performances to choose from, ranging from classical music to hip-hop.
Traveling Cuba is an experience that will not be soon forgotten. Standing out from the rest of the Caribbean, due to the variety of destinations and attractions, Cuba is sure to provide travelers with memories that will last a lifetime.
