Virtually all drivers know the frustration of encountering a construction zone while traveling from one place to another.  It can be exasperating to be on a tight schedule, perhaps on the way to work or an important engagement, only to find yourself trapped in the midst of sluggish traffic and miles of torn up highway.   But despite the perceived inconvenience of roadway construction, it is vital that drivers maintain a constant awareness of their surroundings.  A lack of watchfulness can lead to collisions, injury to construction site workers or other motorists, and substantial fines.  For this reason, construction signs and devices are erected well in advance of work zones to warn motorists of coming changes in traffic conditions.  A proper understanding of these signs can make maneuvering through construction areas much safer for everyone involved.  

Construction (and maintenance) signs are easy to spot, since their appearances are standardized.  They all have black lettering (or legend) on top of an orange background, which is only used in signs posted for temporary circumstances. The bright color helps them stand out from ordinary traffic signs, but its main purpose is to warn drivers of the potential dangers of the area.   Most are in the shape of a diamond, though some are rectangular.  There are five categories of zones within a construction area, and there are different signs and devices for each.  These zones include advance warning area, transition area, buffer space, work area, and termination area.  The zones are designed to provide motorists with adequate time to become aware of and properly prepare for unexpected conditions on the road ahead.  

Channeling devices such as drums, cones, barricades, panels, and tubes are commonly used devices in a construction zone.  Most bear diagonal stripes, which are intended to direct traffic in the right direction.  For example, if the stripes slope downward to the left, drivers should keep to the left, and vice-versa.  A more obvious traffic control device is the flashing arrow panel, which points in the direction of traffic flow, often with an accompanying message.  But the most frequently encountered devices in a work zone are signs.   Some diamond-shaped ones you might see include ¡°road work ahead¡±, ¡°one lane bridge¡±, ¡°construction __ mile(s)¡±, and other similar messages, as well as signs with various figures.  A picture of a figure with a shovel means road workers are ahead; a figure with a flag alerts drivers to a traffic control flagger up ahead, who is responsible for directing traffic to stop and proceed in congested areas.  Frequently seen rectangular signs usually bear messages, such as ¡°detour¡± with an arrow to indicate the direction of the construction site. In addition, motorists should be aware of signs indicating a change in speed limit, which will also be orange, often with accompanying flashing lights.

Most of the signs and devices you will see when entering a construction zone are self-explanatory and simple to understand.  The key is to take note of them long before entering a work area, so that you will be prepared and knowledgeable about the conditions ahead.  This is why markers are made to stand out visually and why they are placed well in advance.  If you take note of all the messages being conveyed to you by means of signs, channeling devices, flashing panels, and flaggers, you will have little difficulty in making your way safely through construction zones.
