Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a great place to explore the marvels of the Old West while still enjoying the comforts of the modern world. If you are planning a trip or vacation to Colorado Springs, then there are a number of historical sites and museums that you will want to see before you leave.
#1: Peterson Air and Space Museum 每 This museum is dedicated to preserving and portraying the contributions to aviation and space history made in Colorado Springs. It is situated on Peterson Air Force Base on the east side of the city in Colorado State Historic District. Some of the exhibits that are available for visitors to examine include: WWII Peterson Army Air Base, the Binational North American Aerospace Defense Command, and the US Air Force Space Command. In addition to these displays, the museum also has an airpark with sixteen historical aircraft and four missiles. Because of the events that occurred on September 11, there are restrictions to when you can visit and you should call ahead for information and times.
#2: Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs 每 Located at 30 West Dale Street, the Fine Arts Center of Colorado is home to a grand collection of Native American artwork, local artists, and region flavor pieces. Hours of operation run 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. You should make a note that this art complex is closed on Mondays and Federal Holidays.
#3: The John May Museum Center and Golden Eagle Ranch RV Park-Campground 每 This museum is made up of two different exhibits. One is dedicated to the insects of the tropics. World-class mounts show visitors the huge range in size, coloration, and camouflage used by insects from the tropics. The second side of this museum complex is dedicated to space exploration.
#4: Old Colorado City 每 Take a tour of Old Colorado City and see re-enactments, displays, and visit restored shops reminiscent of the Old West Days. Visit the Old Colorado City Historical Society at One South 24th Street for tour information and general historical information.
#5: McAllister House Museum 每 While you are in Old Colorado City, make sure you visit the McAllister House Museum located at 423 N. Cascade Ave Colorado. This historical house is one of the oldest homes left in Colorado Springs. Major Henry McAllister built it in 1873. McAllister was a prominent western pioneer, and decorated Civil War Veteran.
#6: Pike*s Peak Cog Railroad 每 If you would like to ride a piece of history visit the Pike*s Peak Cog Railroad, and take a ride on this 114 year old train up to the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak. The train runs from mid-April to New Year*s Day. The visitor center and train station is located at 515 Ruxton Ave. in Manitou Springs, Colorado just 6 minutes west of downtown Colorado Springs.
#7: World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame 每 If sports are more your cup of tea, then stop by the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame located at twenty first street in Colorado Springs and is home to historical displays of world class figure skating. Guided group tours are available for family gatherings, schools, or other groups. The museum is open all year long, Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. through 4 p.m.
#8: Western Museum of Mining & Industry 每 Gold is what brought most of the first settlers to Colorado Springs. Visit the Western Museum of Mining & Industry to try your hand at panning for gold, and learning about the history of the mining industry in Colorado Springs. This museum is located I-25 exit 156A, and slightly east of the Air Force Academy Entrance.
Colorado Springs offers a wide variety of historical sites, natural history museums, and cultural exhibits that are guaranteed to entertain and educate.
