Cologne is a city plentiful in historical, artistic and cultural significance. It is, in fact, Germany¡¯s oldest city. Founded by the Romans 2000 years ago, Cologne has plenty of sites and attractions to remind us of its rich past.  Located on the Rhine River, it has grown into an epicenter of trade, artistic talent and cultural wealth that make its present just as interesting as its history.

Immediately upon entering the city, Cologne¡¯s most famous landmark, the Cologne Dom (cathedral) will catch the eye of any tourist. With its Gothic architecture and towering spires, it is an unbelievable sight. Construction of the Dom began in 1248 and wasn¡¯t completely finished until 1880. For a magnificent view of the city and the Rhine River, climb the winding steps (all 509 of them) to the observation platform. Stop in the belfry on the way up; here you will find a huge free-swinging bell that you can walk around. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The Dom is one of the most amazing cathedrals in Europe and should not be missed.

Surrounding the Dom are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes to browse. Head down Hohestrasse, a street where one can find an abundance of stores that are conveniently located near the cathedral. Find a caf¨¦, have a cup of coffee or some ice cream and relax from your trek to the top of the Dom. 

For people interested in the Roman influence on the city, visit the R?misch-Germanische Museum. Here, you can learn about the history of Cologne, and particularly its history involving the Romans. You can see old Roman artifacts and learn about their founding and inhabiting Cologne. Also visit the Kolnisches Stadtmuseum to learn more about the vast history of the city from the Middle Ages. Afterward, visit any or all of the gates that can still be found around the city that were once part of the wall that surrounded it during the Middle Ages; try the Eigelsteintor Gate- a classic example of an old medieval gate.

For art lovers, Cologne offers numerous museums that are worth the trip. The Museum Ludwig is a very popular museum that houses a huge modern art collection. Particularly interesting is the vast collection of Picasso; here you will find over 700 pieces by the artist. It also has one of the largest collections of Pop Art in the world. The Wallraf-Richartz Museum is another place for art lovers to stop. It has a fantastic collection, filled with everything from Renoir to Dali and is sure to have something for everyone. 

One of the most original and interesting museums in Cologne is the Imhoff-Stollwerck Museum. At this shockoladenmuseum (chocolate museum) you can learn about the history of chocolate, its different properties and the process that cocoa goes through before becoming a chocolate bar. Visitors get to enter an actual chocolate factory and dip a cookie into its flowing chocolate fountain. 

Cologne has plenty to do for visitors of all kinds. After climbing to the top of the cathedral and visiting some of the many museums, allow yourself to sit back and enjoy the beauty of the city and its people. Try a nice, relaxing boat tour down the Rhine River or go to a local pub and drink a K?lsch beer- it can only be brewed in Cologne so this is the place to try it!
