Finding a great club while traveling can be hit or miss. But with a little planning and the right attitude you can dance the night away at the hippest spots, listen to the hottest local bands, and mingle with the locals.
Traveling to different cities offers great opportunities to try something new or see a favorite activity in a whole new light. Although acting on impulse has its benefits, a little preparation is always a good idea. Take a little time to think about what type of club you want to visit. Is a vacation just not complete without dancing the night away at the hottest dance club? Are you a jazz aficionado looking to find an undiscovered talent? Do you want to test your funny bone at a late night improv comedy club? Taking some time to think about what type of club you want to visit can help you limit your choices and get you started in the right direction.
After you figured out what type of club is for you, its time for at least a little research. If you are not sure what you are looking for, researching your options before you travel can certainly help you figure it out. Try the web to start. Most destinations have on-line visitor¡¯s guides, local newspaper editions, and many have nightlife guides. If there is a specific type of club that interests you check out any related and fan sites that may be available. Search for reviews and guidelines, and don¡¯t forget to check out user reviews if they have them. Opinions from real people who actually went to the club can provide extra information and may be helpful in planning your club adventure.
Make a list of possibilities and then look to see if the clubs that spark your interest have their own sites. In addition to providing more specific information, sites for individual clubs will often list upcoming events and specials. Some even have mailing lists and on-line loyalty programs that may get you additional offers and alerts to the latest happenings at the club. If you have found a club that is an absolute must, consider sending an e-mail or giving them a call. Ask to speak to the promotions or marketing manager and let them know you will be traveling to their area and would like to go to their club. Ask about dress code, door policies, specials and their suggestions for getting the most out of your trip. If you are particularly daring, ask if you can be placed on any guest or VIP lists for one of the nights you will be traveling ¨C especially if it¡¯s a midweek night. They may just say yes!
Once you¡¯ve arrived at your destination there are plenty of steps you can take to make the most of your clubbing. Make sure to get copies of local newspapers, city magazines and free papers. They have the most up-to date information on clubs and activities. Be sure to skim through any location magazines provided by your hotel. While they often list and review clubs as part of an advertising agreement, they can also provide useful information about specific venues.
Whatever you do, talk to your hotel¡¯s concierge. It is an unwritten rule of the universe that Hotel Concierges know everything. They know the hottest clubs and how to get in and can often arrange for guests at their hotel to gain admission despite restrictive door policies. Sometimes they even have passes that allow hotel guests to complimentary or reduced cover charges. If you didn¡¯t do your research and are unsure where you want go, a good concierge can provide a list of choices and options sure to meet your specific requirements. If you are staying at a hotel without a concierge, visit one of the finer hotels in town for a drink in the lobby bar. While you are there stop by and ask the concierge for their recommendation. They may not be able to help you with offers reserved for hotel guests, but most will gladly give a recommendation.
Whatever you do, don¡¯t forget to ask the locals. Let¡¯s face it, no one knows a place better than the people who live there. As you¡¯re doing your sightseeing ask the people for recommendations. What are their favorite bars and clubs, what clubs are popular but not worth the effort and where would they go if they only had one night in town? Ask tour bus drivers, sales people, hotel clerks, restaurant servers and even bartenders. . Cabdrivers are another great resource. They often know the latest hot spots, what time they open and close and even more importantly, what time they get hot. You¡¯ll be surprised how many people love to show off their town and provide recommendations you would never find in the tour guides
One final tip - be adventurous. A couple of friends once discovered a great local club in Paris that was not listed in any travel magazines, by following a hip, well-dressed couple through the lobby of an office building and down a hidden flight of stairs. They danced the night away, surrounded by Parisians without another tourist in site. They never even knew the name of the club, but it remains a fantastic memory and a story they recount often. Of course, it¡¯s important to use common sense when taking this approach. You should understand the areas of town you are visiting and try the adventure with a companion or group if you can. And if anything seems suspect or out of place ¨C just leave, no night out is worth putting yourself at risk.
Visiting a destination¡¯s nightclubs is a great way to learn more about the area, meet new people, and try something different. With a little preparation and an adventurous spirit you can have a fantastic time clubbing on your travels.
