Traveling is a favorite amongst many people. The number of places you can go and the things you can do are limitless. If you are a Christian, however, the possibilities don¡¯t seem as endless. Many Christians, while strong in their convictions, many times feel restricted by those same convictions when trying to travel and enjoy the things the world has to offer. Fortunately, there are many places Christians can go and things they can do that will allow them to enjoy all the things God created. Here are some tips for the Christian traveler:
1. Go to places that won¡¯t tempt you to dishonor your beliefs. Disney is in. Las Vegas is out.
2. Look for themed vacations. Family vacation spots offer the most variety. There are also Christian groups that travel to several places.
3. Go to places with spiritual themes. Rome, Israel and even places like Atlanta, GA have several tours with famous churches that are a part of a tour.
4. Do your research. Find out what¡¯s going on in your vacation spot during the time you want to travel there. Going to New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festival may not be a good time for the Christian traveler.
5. Make your plan. Once you decide on a city and have researched the sites you want to visit, plan out your activities so you can make the most out of your vacation.
6. Know your limitations. If you know that a certain place has a show or entertainment contrary to your beliefs, you¡¯ll want to avoid it. Even if it¡¯s located in a famous restaurant or other venue.
7. Late-night activities can be fun. Not all late-night spots and activities are contrary to the Christian lifestyle. Jazz concerts or theme parks offer good wholesome fun and entertainment.
8. Be open-minded. Try a new sport, go camping, or visit a place you¡¯ve never been. Doing something different may cause you to create your own fun. Variety is the spice of life.
9. Relax. No matter where you go, there will always be some one or something that is contrary to your Christian values. You don¡¯t have to participate. Most vacation activities in its self are not bad¡ªjust those participating. Regardless, you can still have fun.
10. Take control. If it¡¯s possible that the movie being shown on the twelve-hour flight to Europe might offend you, have your portable DVD ready.
11. Be specific. Ask the waiter or server for the island drink without the ¡°spirits¡±. If you¡¯re on a resort, ask the resort personnel for specific details regarding the planned resort activities.
12. Be creative. You can go to the island and get a private resort or bungalow and plan your own activities. Allowing your creative juices to flow may help you discover more about you!
13. Attend a Christian conference or convention. The Mega-Fest is just one example of a national festival devoted to Christians. All the activities are geared for the Christian. Most of these annual events go to different cities every year making it easier for you to decide where to go. |
