When planning a camping or backpacking excursion, there is no need to invest in expensive supplies touted by many outfitters. While you may need to purchase such essentials as sleeping bags and tents, you probably already own most of the provisions needed. Your inventory of needed items will vary based on where you are going, the activities you have planned, and the planned time length of the trip. When preparing for a camping or backpacking trip, it is a good idea to prepare a checklist of items you will need. Unfortunately, many people are able to easily remember to bring obvious items such as cooking gear and clothing, but forget essential toiletries such as shampoo or soap. In order to avoid these problems, use categories to group items on your list. Doing so will allow you to note glaring omissions in needed supplies.
While it is important to pack only the items you need, be cautions that you don¡¯t underestimate the need for certain items. Be careful to bring enough supplies for everyone. Your basic list of personal items should include toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels and washcloths, and toilet paper. Other important items include flip-flops for showering, soap and shampoo, combs and brushes, and deodorant. The individual needs of each person will also dictate items needed such as feminine products, shaving supplies, and personal medications.
Other personal items that are often overlooked include insect repellant, lip balm, sunglasses, and sunscreen. It is often easier to remember items that we use on a daily basis, but outdoor adventures create different needs and it is important to bring items to ensure health and safety. You might think that you won¡¯t be getting that much sun exposure, but experts caution that people tend to underestimate the time they spend in the sun. Even a minor sunburn can substantially increase your chances of getting skin cancer, so sunscreen is an absolute necessity when preparing for an outdoor trip. Bring enough sunscreen for everyone on the trip and remember to reapply the lotion several times during the day.
In addition to everyday toiletries, it is vital to prepare a first aid kit for your trip. Your first aid supplies should be contained in a durable, waterproof container that is clearly marked as a first aid kit. The items you include in your kit will vary based on your needs, but it is advisable to pack gauze, bandages, hydrogen peroxide, and a thermometer. Other items that may be included are burn ointment, sunburn cream, antacids, Ibuprofen or Tylenol, a snakebite kit, tweezers, and cotton swabs. Be sure to check the contents of your kit before every trip and restock as needed.
After you have created a checklist, provide copies to travel companions and assign each individual a group of items to be responsible for bringing. When preparing to leave, go over the list a final time to ensure that all needed supplies and equipment are packed. By preparing a checklist in advance, you can ensure you are well prepared and that your outdoor experience will be a success.
