The perks of camping toasters and their accessories are that they seem to make the food they cook very tasty with that subtle hint of outdoor flavor that is difficult to describe but highly praised.

     Toasters that are used for camping are many and simple to use. Some can be homemade and some are purchased. They can be used for toasting virtually anything a camper would want to toast and eat. 

     There are toasters that can be purchased that resemble metal plates with two to four slanted slots to hold bread. By placing these on a heating source such as a campfire or portable stove they toast bread rather well and in a short time, sometimes faster than a home electric toaster. They can also be used to heat up pre-made sandwiches or to cook some such as grilled cheese sandwiches. These toasters can fold up for easy acking and unpacking. 

     There are some toasters that come with long handles that have a metal box that closes at the end by means of two hinges. Believe it or not this toaster is perfect for making pastries. Place some pie dough or biscuit dough on each and and some type of filling like canned cherry pie filling. Close the toaster and place near or even in a heat source and in no time voila, cherry pie. Of course the fillings can vary from pizza to roast beef to peanut butter and honey. These toasters also make some of the best tasting schmores. They seem made for just that purpose.

     Popcorn can be made with camping toasters. Some are made explicitly for this purpose. A good way to make one from scratch is with a large cookie tin. Perforate the bottom and lid with holes approximately one-eighth to one quarter of and inch. When these are heated up they pop popcorn wonderfully and the campfire gives the popcorn a type of crunchy grilled flavor. If the perforations are made larger these toasters are excellent for roasting ears of corn or baking potatoes. Make sure the tins are not overheated and that they do not have any plastic, paper or paint adhering to the surface.

     There are toasters and accessories made for use on campfires, portable stoves, and even electric outlets for use in recreational vehicles or cabins. They are made of cast iron, aluminum, and steel.

     Some campers enjoy toasting food on the end of long metal forks. These are available commercially or can easily be made at home. They must be clean and long enough to avoid injury. Usually a wooden handle is sufficient to keep the heat from getting too unbearable on the hands. These forks are great for toasting marshmellos or hot dogs.

     There are camping cook books dedicated to toasting food. These books are full of information on toasting techniques and the various types of toasters available or that are easily constructed. The recipes in these books are usually simple and easy to follow with only a few ingredients neccessary.
