Most people think of Las Vegas when they think of Nevada, but this state has much more to offer.  Beautiful Lake Tahoe, numerous mountain ranges, and high deserts are some of the types of terrain campers have to look forward to in Nevada.  There are many campgrounds, both public and private, for campers who want to get away from it all or discover the history of the Old West in Nevada.  Here are some of the best campgrounds in the Silver State.

Elko is located in northeastern Nevada near the South Fork State Recreation Area.  The Barrick Goldstrike Mine can be toured there for a taste of Nevada¡¯s important mining history, and a cowboy poet festival is held in Elko every January. The Valley View RV Park in Elko is only a few miles off IH-80 and has almost 100 sites for RVs and tent camping.  There are full hookups for RVs and tent sites are only $10 a night.  The tent sites have grills and picnic tables, and there are laundry facilities, rest rooms and showers, a playground, and a snack bar.  This is a friendly park with grassy areas and trees and is a nice place to stop if you¡¯re driving across Nevada.

Winnemucca is on IH-80 in the northwestern part of Nevada, between Elko and the California border.  Well-known for being the home of the Burning Man Festival, Winnemucca is in the Black Rock Desert and is fairly isolated, although it has several camping parks.  The Hi-Desert RV Park, which is ? mile off IH-80 on Winnemucka Blvd., has nice grassy areas, trees, and 137 camping sites.  There are full hookups for RVs, tent sites, and laundry facilities, restrooms and showers, cable TV, a store, pool and spa, and a playground.  Activities such as horseshoes, volleyball, and hiking are offered at the park, and there¡¯s a free shuttle that will take you into town.

The western side of Nevada that shares a border with California is more populated; the cities of Reno, Carson City, and South Lake Tahoe are there, as well as Lake Tahoe and several state recreation areas.  River¡¯s Edge RV Park in Sparks, near Reno, is on the Truckee River and has 164 sites for camping.  Full hookups for RVs are available, as are laundry facilities, restrooms and showers, internet connections, cable TV, and a heated pool.  The park has trails along the river for hiking and cycling, and fishing is also a popular activity there.  Casinos and restaurants are within walking distance of this clean, attractive park.

Carson City is the capital of Nevada, and there are several camping parks within its boundaries.  Comstock Country is a shady park off 395W that has more than 150 camping sites.  There are tent sites as well as full hookups for RVs, and laundry facilities, restrooms and showers, cable TV, a store, internet connections, and a heated pool and spa.  Carson City is a fun city with lots of Old West history; it was named for Kit Carson and the Kit Carson Trail takes visitors through pieces of western history downtown.  Carson City is also near Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, and Reno.

Las Vegas, located in the southeast corner of Nevada, has more than 20 camping parks.  Although many of the parks are solid concrete and have hundreds of sites, they offer excellent amenities such as heated pools and spas, easy access to casinos, phone and internet hookups, and planned activities.  Silverton Hotel, Casino, & RV Park is one of the best Las Vegas parks; it has 460 sites for RVs (no tent sites), full hookups, cable TV, a restaurant, shuttle bus service, laundry facilities, and a store.  It is located near the airport off IH-15.  There are two pools and water slides at the park, and each site has a tree and wooden fence, a picnic table and grill.  The restaurant has very reasonable prices for its buffet meals, and the Silverton Casino is adjacent to the park.  

The Las Vegas International RV Resort is new and is located on Russell Rd. It has 220 sites for RVs only, and offers full hookups.  Wireless internet connections are offered at the park, as well as restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, security, and a clubhouse.  A pool and a spa are also at this resort, and the park is very quiet and clean.  

For those who want to camp in tents, 13 Mile Campground in Las Vegas, which is operated by the Bureau of Land Management, has $10 tent sites and also 25 walk-in sites.   RVs are also welcome but there are no hookups.  Each site has a fire ring, a grill and a picnic table, but there are no other amenities such as electricity or water hookups.  This is a good area for hiking in the desert or observing wildlife, but it gets very hot in the summer.  There is a visitor center at the park with exhibits on the area; there are also vending machines there.
