Nebraska is a beautiful state that offers numerous camping opportunities in all parts of the state. The campsites that offer the most activities are those that are State Parks. A park permit is required for all State Parks and all of the parks are handicap accessible.
Chadron State Park off of US Hwy 385, near the town of Chadron, is the first state park of Nebraska. Located at Pine Ridge the campground has been modernized and has a swimming pool and trail rides. Big game and wild turkey hunting is also available in season. Campgrounds are available year-round and cabins are available mid-April thru mid-November.
Smith Falls State Park off NE Hwy 12, outside Valentine, is the newest state park in Nebraska. Home to the states highest waterfall, a historic bridge spanning the Niobrara River allows visitors to walk to the falls. Hikers will enjoy the Jim McAllister Nature Trail which is surrounded by diverse ecological systems found nowhere else but Nebraska. This park is not open year-round but from April 1st thru November 30th.
Indian Cave State Park just outside Shubert, offers activities for hikers, bicyclers, horseback riders, boaters and RVers. During the winter cross-country skiing and sledding is available. Camping and hiking is available year-round but other activities are only available Memorial weekend through October.
The Rock Creek Station State Historical Park and State Recreation Area is located near the town of Fairbury. Former home to pioneers and freighters traveling the Oregon Trail, ruts are still visible. The Overland Stage and Pony Express also used the area routes. Fairbury is where ¡°Wild Bill¡± Hickok first took steps down the path to becoming an infamous gunfighter. Grounds are open year-round and a modern campsite is available at the State Recreation Area.
Niobrara State Park off NE Hwy 12 outside Niobrara is set in Missouri River Bluff country. From mid-May thru September guided Missouri River raft tours are available. General Missouri River access is available year-round. Also available are horseback trail rides, a swimming pool, hiking, fishing and, in the winter, cross-country skiing. Camping and cabins are open all year long.
Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and State Recreation Area is off US Hwy 30 outside North Platte. Historic home of the creator of the Wild West Show, William ¡°Buffalo Bill¡± Cody is an American legend. Originally a renowned buffalo hunter and scout Buffalo Bill decided to take the excitement of the West, East to those who¡¯d never dream of venturing out to a place so dangerous. The house and barn area available for touring year-round and there are also blinds available for crane viewing. Camping is also available at any time of the year.
Keller Park State Recreation Area off US Hwy 183, near Ainsworth, is the place to be for people who enjoy fishing. Popular for its rainbow trout it is also home to numerous warm-water species. There are also camping and hiking available as well as camp sites for RV¡¯s. This state park is available to campers year-round.
So whether you enjoy just communing with the outdoors or enjoy history, there are numerous camp grounds to choose from. From solitary events such as hiking to group ones such as a float trip in the Missouri, there is a little something for everyone in Nebraska.
