Since Maine is such a beautiful state, it requires more than one unofficial state motto.  The favorite among the locals is, ¡°Maine: The Way Life Should Be.¡±  If you¡¯ve ever been to Maine, you¡¯ll understand.  Maine has rocky coastlines with cold blue waters, rugged mountains full of moose and bald eagles, and thick forests that cover most of the state.  One of the best ways to experience Maine is to get to the heart of one of its best features: the outdoors.  Families and vacationers that enjoy camping will find Maine a virtual paradise, as each and every campground has the best of what Maine has to offer: stunning scenery, wildlife and fresh air.  Following are a list of only a few of Maine¡¯s best campgrounds.

Near famous Kennebunkport in the South, Salty Acres Campground is near beautiful Goose Rocks Beach.  It has well over 200 tent and trailer sites, coin laundry, a pool, hot showers, flush toilets, hook-ups for both water and electricity, and even a small market for provisions: all the comforts of home with the experience of southern coastal Maine at the same time.  With sites nestled among trees or full of open abundant sunshine, Salty Acres is open from early May to Columbus Day.

Sebago Lake is the second largest Lake in Maine and offers camping in many areas around the shore.  One such place is the aptly named, Sebago Lake Family Campground.  This campground offers over 100 campsites that are large, private, and nestled among the tall pines that surround the lake, or if you want a bit more of home, 8 cozy cottages are available.  A 600 ft. private beach is located directly across from the campground, for swimming, boating, or just relaxing in the sun, and the shore offers hiking, exploring, and amazing views.

Farther north, at the opposite end of the state, Arndt¡¯s Aroostook River Lodge and Campground is open year round.  In the summer, enjoy camping, fishing, canoeing and hunting; and in the winter months, stay at the lodge and spend your days cross-country skiing or snowmobiling.  Arndt¡¯s is known as the Premier Lodging and Camping Facility in northern Maine, and fulfills the adventuresome nature in us all.

Hidden Springs Campground in Millinocket, just outside Baxter State Park, is a great base camp for visitors to Mount Katahdin.  The campground offers fire places, free hot showers, picnic tables, a pool, a campground store, and even horseshoe pits.  The surrounding woods are full of opportunities for hiking, mountain climbing, white water rafting, hunting and fishing, and Hidden Springs has even developed Moose Maps that show the best places in the area to get a glimpse of a moose.

For a more rustic and smaller atmosphere, The Last Resort near Jackman, Maine is the place to go.  Jackman is a tiny town on the Canadian border that has none of the tourist attractions of larger towns.  The Last Resort is a century old establishment with eight rustic log cabins and four tent sites right on the shore of Long Pond.  The cove is shallow and safe for children, and is often visited by bald eagles, loons, deer, otters, and even moose.  Enjoy fishing, canoeing, and hiking, or just bask in the beautiful scenery.

If you like the outdoors, but still want a bustling town nearby with lots of great shopping, the Cedar Haven Campground, near Freeport, boasts scenic campsites only two miles from famous L.L. Bean.  Cedar Haven has a pond for swimming, more than 50 camp sites, water and electricity hook ups, a game room, hot showers, clean restrooms, a market, laundry facilities, and even cable TV access.  When you make your reservation, ask about their lobster bake weekends.  Open May to October; Cedar Haven will be a fun place for the whole family.

Pleasant Hill Campground, in central Maine is near Bangor.  This is a campground for those who want the best of Maine nearby, but aren¡¯t really into roughing it.  Both RVs and tents are welcome, the roads are paved, more than 100 sites are available in the sunshine or shade, fireplaces and picnic tables are at each site, and all modern hook ups are available.

Maine is perhaps most famous for Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island.  Bar Harbor Campground is the closest campground to these areas, and more.  The scenery is breathtaking, the air crisp and clear.  Bar Harbor is a quaint town loved by all, where vacationers can go for a lobster dinner before retiring to their tent or RV.  The Bar Harbor Campground offers a heated pool, clean bathrooms, and spectacular ocean views.
