Nothing describes Indiana more than the catch phrase, "There's more than corn in Indiana". This proves true even though most of the United States couldn't possibly imagine what this corn filled state has to offer. Among a variety of landmarks and state parks, there are cherished and true camping sites that every person who vacations to Indiana should explore at one time.
When people think of Northwest Indiana, most people think of Gary but they are missing out on so many small and quaint towns that offer the benefits of small town living.
One of my most favorite campgrounds in Northwest Indiana is Donna Jo's Campground in Kouts, Indiana. This campground is hidden behind homes and corn fields and the only true way of knowing where they are located is the camping sign posted out on the main road leading to the many back gravel roads. Donna Jo¡¯s offers a true campground experience with animals to watch such as deer and peacocks and a man made pond to swim in. Even though each year their price for camping goes up a little at a time, it is a very good investment for a weekend away. Besides a woodsy campsite, they offer restroom and laundry facilities plus each campsite has it¡¯s own waterspout and electricity is available.
During different times of the year they have events held in their community center such as a Halloween party or labor day band. The owners are also very friendly and take very good care of their campground. If you are interested in taking a weekend away in this woodsy campground they can be located at 1255 S 350 E., Kouts, Indiana 46347 and you can make it easier on yourself by making a reservation at (219) 766-2186.
Down in Marshall, Indiana is Turkey Run State Park. They offer camping and hiking. This is a very good campground to take your children to allow them to appreciate nature and have fun at the same time. They offer campsites as well as cabins for rent for the weekend. Turkey run has 213 Class A electric campsites with the access to modern restroom facilities.
While you are out in Turkey Run, they offer 11 different trails to explore but before you explore, be sure to pick up a map of the trails just to be on the safe side. If you decide to explore, make sure you wear good walking and hiking shoes plus you could possibly pack a lunch for your trek.
Each trail offers a different opportunity for experiences when hiking. Trail one starts off easy and each trail gets a bit more adventurous. By the time you reach Trail 11, if you decide to take all 11 in one day, you will have the opportunity to view the Lieber cabin and the Log Church. While you are exploring you will run across the Narrows Covered Bridge and the Lusk Home. Every one of these warrants an expedition while you are visiting Turkey Run. If you are interested in exploring this state park you can contact them at Turkey Run State Park 8121 E. Park Rd. Marshall, Indiana 47859 and you can contact them by phone at (765) 597-2635.
