The 2.2 million acres of wilderness that were set aside in 1872 as Yellowstone National Park contain some of the most amazing natural wonders in the United States.  If you plan on visiting Yellowstone you may want to spend more than just a few days in the area, with some travel agents recommending at least a week in order to have enough time to see the sights.  

Of course, one of the attractions at Yellowstone are the geysers, or natural hot springs that intermittently eject steam and hot water.  And the most famous of them all is Old Faithful.  

When you visit the geysers you might want to consider stopping by The Old Faithful Inn. Even if you don¡¯t plan on staying in the historic inn, a visit is well worth the effort.  The inn, which was constructed with native logs in 1904, is seven stories high and seven hundred feet long.  It has survived many natural disasters in the park, including the massive forest fires of 1988, which burned some 1.4 million acres of the park.

You will feel like you¡¯ve stepped back in time when you enter the inn with its rustic craftsmanship and rooms filled with original antique furnishings.  The lobby is designed to evoke a forest like setting, complete with a tree house nestled at the peak of the grand room.  Relax and watch the sunset from the veranda in a rocking chair or visit the gift shop devoted to the work of Native American artisans.  Enjoy the fireplace with its 500-ton chimney or just gaze at the geyser outside that gives the inn its name - Old Faithful.

The Old Faithful area, also known as the Upper Geyser Basin, contains the largest concentration of geysers in the world.  In order to make sure you are in the right place at the right time, obtain a schedule for geyser eruptions, which can be found at the Old Faithful Visitor Center.  Some of the geysers known for their spectacular displays are Beehive, Castle and Giant.  One favorite tourist destination in the basin is the Morning Glory Pool, which was named for its likeness to the flower.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast there are many places to camp throughout the park as well as a wide sampling of recreational activities.  You can see the park by hiking or bicycling, where you will find ample opportunities to enjoy nature.  You can choose to boat, fish, hike, ride horses or picnic. Be sure to bring your camera along so that you can capture the scenic vistas, wildlife and historic points of interest.

If backpacking or backcountry camping is what you are looking for, the park offers a system of designated backcountry campsites.  But before you depart on your camping trip be sure to obtain a Backcountry Use Permit, which is required for all overnight stays.  Permits can be obtained from most ranger stations and visitor centers in the park.  Or, if you prefer to explore the park in a group, check out the Ranger Led Activities and Campfire Programs for seasonal excursions, which are very popular with families.

Looking for animals is a popular activity and the park supports quite a diverse system of wildlife.  Yellowstone is home to many different species, so be on the lookout for:   wolves, bears, moose, elk or buffalo.  You might also catch a glimpse of Canadian Geese, ducks, trumpeter swans, coyotes, grizzly bear, eagles, otters, black bear and bighorn sheep.  Although it is difficult to predict just when and where to see the animals, the best times to observe them are when they are out feeding, which tends to be early morning and evening hours.  When looking for wildlife, the following areas are recommended: Fishing Bridge, Hayden Valley, Mount Washburn and Lamar Valley.  

Yellowstone offers many spots in which to relax and enjoy nature, including canyons, waterfalls and lakes.  Tower Falls and Gibbon Falls are known for their exceptional beauty and, if majestic canyons are on your list, there are several to choose from including Artist Point, Inspiration Point, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Lower Falls.  If you want to explore wildflowers, the best time to look for them is during the months of early summer and spring.  

If you find that you aren¡¯t able to cover as much ground as you¡¯d like to, you may decide to stay longer.  Or, you can always schedule a return to this historic park, which has attracted visitors from all over the world for well over a century.
