If connecting with nature connects couples in love, then there is no better destination than Yellowstone. The oldest National park in the world, Yellowstone was dedicated in 1872, as ¡°a pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.¡±
Yellowstone National Park covers over two million acres of stunning wilderness and features spectacular geological sights such as the terraced mineral Mammoth Hot Springs and the world famous geyser, Old Faithful. Yellowstone¡¯s vast terrain includes mountains, forests, alpine lakes, rivers, canyons, and a plethora of plant and wildlife.
Hiking is a fabulous way to get off the beaten path and truly observe Yellowstone¡¯s natural phenomenon. Over 1,000 miles of backcountry trails traverse the park. Yellowstone is one of the few untamed places remaining in the United States where you can easily get lost in the wilderness and couples should be cautious before venturing out on any hike. For everyone¡¯s safety, permits are required for anything other than day hikes. If venturing out on your own makes you nervous take a hike with an informative Naturalist and learn about the trees, plants, and animals inhabiting the area. Elk are especially visible from the various trails around the park¡¯s most famous feature, Old Faithful. This predictable geyser shoots water 135 feet into the air approximately every ninety minutes. The world¡¯s tallest active geyser, Norris Geyser Basin, erupts less frequently and is an easy quarter mile hike from its parking area.
Yellowstone boasts incredible wildlife, most easily spotted at their feeding times in the early mornings and evenings. Animals are abundant in this region and include moose, bison, bears, bighorn sheep, mule deer, coyotes, pelicans and hundreds of others. Whether on foot or in an automobile, always be careful of a wild animal¡¯s strength and speed and keep your distance.
From the water couples can enjoy an intimate, unique perspective of Yellowstone. Xanterra Parks and Resorts runs the majority of Yellowstone¡¯s lodging and activities. Plenty of information is readily available throughout the park. Outboard and rowboat rentals are available from the Bridge Bay Marina on Yellowstone Lake. Cruise North America¡¯s largest alpine lake and enjoy spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains surrounding you. Kayak and canoe rentals are offered on the park¡¯s several rivers. A whitewater rafting group tour is an exciting way to rush down the wide, roaring Yellowstone River.
For those preferring to stay on land, horse rides are offered at three of the park¡¯s Xanterra locations: Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower-Roosevelt, and Canyon. You may also bring your own horse stock. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is a 1,000 foot drop of Yellowstone River water against the bright yellow and red colors of the stone canyon. A two and a half mile drive off the main road leads to a view of the canyon¡¯s brilliant hues. Explore the canyon and waterfalls on foot or horse-back following paths which lead to romantic vistas such as Inspiration Point and Look-out Point.
An outdoor picnic is a romantic way to enjoy a meal during a day exploring Yellowstone. Forty-nine different picnic spots are scattered throughout the park and some include fire pits and facilities.
Accommodations are as varied as the landscape in Yellowstone National Park. For couples desiring to sleep under the stars, Xanterra manages eleven campgrounds with over 1,400 sites offered on a first come first serve basis. The Roosevelt Lodge Cabins are located near President Theodore Roosevelt¡¯s favorite campground and features rustic lodging and privacy. Canyon Lodge and Cabins offers basic, but private accommodations and is situated in the center of the park with an adjacent campground.
Upscale lodging is found within Yellowstone¡¯s beautiful, old hotels which are also run by Xanterra Parks and Resorts. Yellowstone Lake Hotel features nicely appointed guest rooms and a fine dining room. A 1905 guidebook description of the hotel still rings true today, ¡°guests at Lake Hotel found a serenity absent elsewhere in Wonderland¡ whether one walked the lakeshore or merely sat and watched the backdrop of wooded hills and rugged peaks.¡± The national historic landmark, Old Faithful Inn, sits near the famous geyser and guests can stay in luxurious suites and dine in one of several restaurants. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel is the only hotel open in the winter and offers romantic cabins with hot tubs.
Most hotels and roads are only open in Yellowstone from May until October. Weather in this mountainous region is extremely unpredictable and travelers need to come prepared for a snowstorm any time of the year. Summer months allow the most road access, warm enough weather to camp, and the least chance of snow, but also invite crowds and long lines of automotive traffic. Fall and spring offer diminished crowds, warm days and cool nights. Wildflowers abound in the spring and their colorful beauty makes the chancy weather well worth the risk. Visitors can even enjoy Yellowstone in the winter on cross country skies, snowmobiles, or a snow coach. Warming huts are stationed throughout the quiet, snow-covered park selling food and hot drinks.
Yellowstone¡¯s romantic beauty can be explored, enjoyed, and appreciated during any season. Whether hiking, boating, driving or horseback riding, couples are always surrounded by Yellowstone¡¯s abundant wildlife and breathtaking natural wonders. |
