Situated on an island at the mouth of the impressive Stikine River, Wrangell offers visitors a taste of a frontier community in the midst of a most unique and pristine wilderness. Alaskan wildlife expeditions will take you close up to glaciers, give you the fishing trip of a lifetime and put you face to face with Alaskan wildlife all under the watchful and safe eye of your guide or Wildlife Observatory! Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory is necessary see for the kids. Here they will be able to safely view Alaska black and brown bears up close and taste Wrangell¡¯s delightful salmon. A permit is required to visit the wildlife observatory from July 5 to August 25. If you visit at any other time, a permit is not necessary nor is a reservation.
Area attractions to hold the attention of kids young and old include:
? Tlingit (pronounced Klinkit) Indians make their home in this area along with other native tribes. Their culture produced ceremonial costumes, totem poles, and superb blankets. The Tlingits were fierce warriors. When the first Russians tried to settle in Sitka, the Tlingits drove them out. Learn about the Tlingits in most easily at Chief Shakes Island located in the middle of Wrangell Harbor. The island, the site of the Chief Shakes Tribal House is a national historical monument and totem poles surround the community house.
? Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park has the highest concentration of petroglyphs in Southeast Alaska. It has just recently been named a State Historic Park. A boardwalk and deck overlook the Petroglyph Beach, the Stikine River and Zimovia Straits. On the deck, you will find replicas of many of the Petroglyphs so you can make rubbings if you want. Petroglyphs are designs or symbols chiseled or carved into rocks found on boulders and outcrops along the shore. Petroglyphs may be a form of writing, communicating, or record keeping, or as some say they may not have any meaning whatsoever other than an artistic value.
? Stikine River, or Stik-Heen, means 'Great River' in Tlingit. Certainly is a great river running 400 miles from headwaters in British Columbia to its mouth near Wrangell. The Stikine still carves its path through glacial valleys and delta flats.
? Muskeg Meadows is carved from a rain forest. The beauty of this course is beyond description. Snow-capped mountains, wildlife, and ocean views make this course a truly remarkable experience! Muskeg Meadows is a 9-hole course with a 250 yard driving range. Depending on what time of year you visit you might even see the migration of Bald Eagles at the mouth of the Stikine River.
? Totem Park in Wrangell is home to many totem poles carved by Tlinget carvers. The tallest pole in this park is a replica of the original, carved in 1890.
? Wrangell Museum depicts the cities history through its exhibits of the Gold Rush, trapping, logging and fishing. There are four Tlingit house posts dating back to the 1700s and thought to be the oldest known hand carved house posts still in existence today. You will also find displays of artifacts with Russian, Chinese, Japanese, British, American, and Tlingit influences.
? Rainbow Falls located in the Tongass National Forest has two viewing decks, an upper deck and a lower deck. The waterfall is best viewed from the lower deck. Tongass National Forest is the nation's largest covering most of Southeast Alaska. In the forest you can view bears, spawning salmon, eagles, and the awesome vistas of Alaska. You can also take a sled-dog ride on a glacier, go hiking, fish the streams, or just simply take in all the beauty of this area in one of the rental cabins.
? Kennicott Glacier Lodge is the ultimate adventure! The kids will love visiting the streets of Alaska¡¯s largest ghost town and hiking on mountain trails while exploring famous mines with names such as Jumbo and Mother Lode. You will have a breath-taking view of 14,000-foot mountain peaks. At Kennicott not only will you see a glacier but you can walk on the glacier. Guided, safe, hikes take you right out onto the glacier and all it¡¯s mysterious beauty. You can river raft the glacier-fed Kennicott Whitewater River. You can rent bikes for mountain biking or bring your own.
