Looking for a vacation that combines a Himalayan trek or a safari in Botswana with the camaraderie of hanging out with the girls? Or are you a solo adventurer looking to find your own way through regions of the world that are friendly to women travelers? However you define adventure, there are countless ways to get out and see the world from a woman's perspective. You don't have to be an expert before you go, either - many tour companies offer packages especially for novices or those exploring a new culture.
Wildlife and Nature Expeditions
Alaska's breathtaking coastline and white-blanketed tundra make this state a popular destination for intrepid nature lovers. The iceberg-filled waters are home to whales, sea lions, otters, and puffins, while golden eagles, wolves, caribou, fox, and moose make their homes on the tundra. In fact, the Dalton and Denali highways pass through some of the best moose-watching territory in the world. Brown and grizzly bears populate areas from the islands of southeastern Alaska to the arctic, polar bears inhabit the pack ice and tundra of far northern and western of Alaska, while black bears roam most of Alaska's forests. For those who'd rather not go snow-camping, many expeditions provide lodge accommodations.
Tucked away in a remote north-eastern corner of the Okavango Delta in Botswana lies what is reputedly Africa's most beautiful protected area, the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. Take guided walks, as well as day and nighttime game drives through the diversity of grasslands and trees that offer shelter to lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, elephants, and wild dogs. Motorboat excursions take guests down the upper delta, where hippos, crocodiles, and flocks of herons can be found. In the standard bush lodge provided by many tour companies, guests can enjoy the comforts of home in the middle of an African game reserve.
Covering three biologically diverse ecosystems, Brazil provides one of the greatest opportunities for wildlife watching in South America. In the state of Mato Grosso visitors can explore Pantanal wetlands, Amazon rainforest, and savannah. The Pantanal is home to ocelots and other wild cats along with giant anteaters and giant otters. Hyacinth macaws, Toco toucans, and Jabiru storks bring living color to the rainforests and rare jaguars and maned wolves can still be found stalking the savannah. Farther east, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, is the Poco das Antas Biological Reserve, which harbors more native species of flora and fauna than any other region in the neotropics and is also the last remaining habitat of the rare Golden Lion Tamarin monkey.
The Scenic Route: hikes and horseback packs
If you think you've seen Yellowstone National Park, come make the rounds again on horseback and find out what you missed. With 2,219,791 acres (899,015 hectares), Yellowstone is so vast that much of what it has to offer remains hidden from casual tourists. A horseback pack trip, whether for a few hours or overnight, allows travelers to cover more ground and discover the park's most remote treasures. Share the trails with elk, moose, bison, wolves, and big horn sheep as you ramble along through alpine fields, over breathtaking mountain passes, and past steaming geysers and bubbling thermal mud pots.
Switzerland's Engadine Valley, nestled between the Austrian Tyrol and the Italian Lake District, competes with New Zealand's Lake Te Anau region for the title of "Walking Capital of the World". Take in the picture-perfect scenery as you hike through pine forests and mountain farming villages in the heart of Romansch country. The region's highlights include cultural exploration in the Romansch village of Guarda, windsurfing in the easy-going St. Moritz lakes region, and hiking the Muragl trail above the town of Pontresina. The area is easily accessible, making it perfect for both groups and solo travelers.
The grandeur of the Himalayas and the secrets of its ancient culture make hiking in Nepal an ultimate adventure. However, if a high-altitude climb doesn't appeal to you, then Adventure Women travel agency has an alternative. The agency has mapped out a trek through Nepal's Annapurna foothills that lets travelers experience the mountains at 8,000 feet (2438 meters), instead of the usual 14,000 feet (4267 meters). The trek is lodge-based (rather than camping), which allows for a more leisurely pace. A two-day raft trip along the Seti River and a safari by elephant back in the tiger territory of Royal Chitwan National Park are also included.
Water Adventures: rafting, kayaking, and sailing
The twelve-day raft journey down the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona is the perfect trip for a reunion to rediscover your friendship with some old college girlfriends. The river roils with 150 rapids and winds its way through each of Earth's climatic zones, from alpine forests on the rim to Sonoran deserts lower down. While not for a solo traveler, many women-only tour companies organize group rafting trips.
The British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean is one of the finest tropical playgrounds there is for sailing, snorkeling, surfing, and scuba diving. The year-round trade winds make it one of the world's premier destinations for wind surfing and kite boarding. The waters surrounding the islands hold colorful fish, rare coral reefs, and mysterious ship wrecks. Boaters can charter a yacht for a week or two, take a crewed boat out for a day, or paddle a canoe or kayak across the islands' many lagoons.
Winter Adventures: skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing
Dog sledding
For a truly unique adventure, try your hand at mushing a team of huskies through pristine wilderness in Alaska, Wyoming, or Minnesota in the U.S., the Rockies or the Temagami in Canada, or even Lapland, Sweden. Catch sight of eagles, elk, and moose by day and after sunset watch the reflection of the moon and the northern lights on crystal white snow. Some dog sled expeditions also offer additional activities such as ice fishing and wildlife watching. Depending on your preference, choose a lodge-based tour or camp out in a yurt (a heated Mongolian tent) or snow cave. No experience is necessary - on most tours a guide will teach you how to mush your own team so you get the full experience.
Snowshoeing or cross country skiing is another way to get a unique perspective of the land. The meadows and tall pine forests around Lake Tahoe offer excellent snowshoeing, as do the miles of backcountry trails throughout Yellowstone National Park. The Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada is another favorite snowshoeing area. Start the day with ice fishing or just take to the trails to admire the scenery and have a go at identifying the tracks of deer, moose, deermice, and snowshoe hare that cross your path.
What would winter be without skiing? If you're new to the sport many women-only travel agencies offer packages that include instruction for beginners. Intermediate skiers looking to strike out for new territory might consider the Tatras, the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range between Poland and Slovakia. The range offers world-class skiing, gorgeous lakes, and the chance to explore the stalactite-filled caves on the Polish side of the mountains. For near-expert skiers looking to refine their skills, free-skiing clinics at Whistler/Blackcomb in British Columbia let skiers tap into local expertise to build skills and refine technique. With over 5000 feet (1524 meters) of vertical on 7000 acres (2832 hectares) of terrain even the most adventurous skiers will find a challenge.
Enjoying the Journey: train and freighter trips
Sometimes the journey is more of an adventure than the destination. Train and freighter travel offer an unhurried pace and a casual environment ideal for small groups and solo travelers alike.
Trans-Siberian Railway
For six and a half days the train "Rossiya" (Russia) winds its way through the 6,152 miles (9289 km) of dense taiga and sweeping plains that stretch from Moscow to Vladivostok. There is no single train called the 'Trans-Siberian Express', but a whole range of trains that take the same route to Siberia. Throughout the trip, talk with Russian and foreign passengers in a 2- or 4-berth compartment or open-plan bunk area. The trans-Mongolian (Moscow to Beijing via Ulaan Baatar) and Trans-Manchurian (Moscow to Beijing via Northern China) are also available, but harder to secure tickets for.
The Great South Pacific Express trundles down Australia's Queensland through lush rainforest along the coral reef coast. Day-long stopovers will give you more time to fully explore the region. Start in the Daintree Rainforest and boat out for some of the world's best snorkeling and diving on the Barrier Reef. Further along the coast, stop by the koala sanctuary in Brisbane and finish up with swimming or surfing at Bondi beach in Sydney.
If you long for the open water, forget the tourist-filled cruise ships and take to the seas in a commercial freighter. Freighter trips last from 7 days to over one hundred days and routes cover almost every corner of the world. On the up side, accommodations are more spacious than on cruise ships and meals are served in the officers' dining quarters. However, the minimal amenities, unstable schedules, and long stretches of free time aren't for everyone. Among many other freighter lines, the Blue Star service takes cargo and passengers from the U.S. east coast to New Zealand and Australia, the German-registered Golden Isle line runs ships from Rotterdam, Holland to Namibia and South Africa, and the German Hanjin & Senator line covers routes from the U.S. west coast to the far east.
Volunteer Adventures
Spend a vacation making a positive difference as you get acquainted with a new culture. A variety of opportunities are available world-wide that require no previous experience.
Many volunteer programs specialize in improving the lives of disadvantaged women. The Baan Unrak, a children's home and sustainable community development project in Thailand, provides children and women with food, shelter, psychological care, education, employment, and opportunities for creative expression. Volunteers teach English, help develop women's businesses, or provide instruction in the arts. In southern Asia, the International Justice Mission, which runs operations rescuing women in slavery, seeks Interventions Volunteers for 6 to 12 months. Global Crossroad works with volunteers in Delhi, Pokhara, Bangkok, Ulaan Baatar, and Beijing to help with community development projects providing women with non-formal education and new means of generating income. Volunteers are also needed to work in orphanages and on conservation projects.
Countless opportunities are also available assisting the general population. Volunteers for Peace runs over 2400 short-term projects in various fields in some 90 countries. Projects last from two weeks to one year. The Council on International Educational Exchange offers more than 500 projects in the fields of archeology, renovation, environmental protection, and social work in more than 30 countries. Groups of 10-20 volunteers from different countries spend 2-4 weeks living and working together.
