Whether you enjoy rafting, canoeing, or kayaking you can find a place to do it in one of the dozens of outstanding rivers that West Virginia has to offer. The Gauley is ranked as one of the top seven whitewater rivers in the world. The New River is considered the longest commercially raftable river in the East. You may also want to try the Cheat River, whose water is unpredictable every time you visit it.
If you are interested in bike riding you can find some of the most beautiful country roads to explore. Rock climbing has grown in popularity since the 80's. The New River Gorge National River area has 1,500 climbing routes in a ten mile area. Harpers Ferry¡¯s river cliffs also attract climbers.
If you are interested in exploring caves, underground caves can be found throughout the state. Organ Cave is the third-largest cave system in the United States. Some commercial caves include Seneca Caverns and Smoke Hole Caverns.
An abundance of hunting and fishing can also be found throughout the state. If hunting deer, waterfowl and small game interest you, it can be found here. Smallmouth and largemouth bass are just a few of the fish that can be found on the waterways.
If you enjoy the wintertime and skiing, you can find cross-country skiing and snowboarding throughout the state. Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Timberline are just a few of the ski resorts available in West Virginia.
For the racing fans, West Virginia offers several tracks devoted to thoroughbred, greyhound or sports car racing. The Charles Town Races and Mountaineer in Chester offers thoroughbred racetracks. Dog racing can be found at Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center near Charleston. Car Racing can be found at Summit Point Raceway in the Eastern Panhandle.
If you enjoy music, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (based in Charleston) regularly performs at home and tours the state. The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra is located in the grand old Capitol Music Hall and the Millbrook Orchestra can be found in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
If you love theater, you can find dinner theaters, open-air stages and community centers performing various plays. You can also find outdoor plays being performed at Pipestem Resort State Park near Beckley or McNeill¡¯s Rangers in Keyser. Theater productions can be found at the Apollo Theater in Martinsburg or the Old Opera House in Charles Town.
West Virginia is full of history. President Abraham Lincoln granted West Virginia statehood on June 20, 1863. It is the only state that was created by presidential proclamation. Much Civil War information can be found at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Lewisburg.
Since the 1870's coal has been mined from the mountains of West Virginia. Tour the Beckley Exhibition Mine to see where coal was moved by hand.
Railroads offer scenic tours of the New River Gorge, Martinsburg, the Potomac Highlands, (to name a few) especially during the fall foliage season.
For the spa lovers, Berkeley Springs State Park offers an outdoor limestone bathtub. Visit Capon Springs, it is home to a family-style resort with one hundred rooms. West Virginia¡¯s most famous spa and landmark springhouse hotel is the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs. It is set on 6,500 acres.
