Aside from Maryland¡¯s own busy cities, fun beaches, and the Appalachian Mountains, this east coast state is also within a few hours drive to a variety of attractions. Maryland is close to the United States capitol, numerous historical cities and sights, fun recreational activities, and beautiful natural scenery.

Washington D.C. is a bustling metropolis most easily accessed by train or bus. Walk the picturesque National Mall and visit the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument on either side of The Mall¡¯s reflecting pool. Within walking distance visit renowned museums and observe impressive historical documents at the Smithsonian. Tour the U.S. capitol building¡¯s spectacular rotunda and watch the Senate and House of Representatives in action. Georgetown is a lively D.C. neighborhood to stroll through featuring colonial architecture, shopping, and trendy restaurants. Sports fans can cheer on professional teams such as Football¡¯s Redskins and Basketball¡¯s Wizards at D.C. area stadiums. Visitors can also pay tribute to the fallen throughout Washington D.C. at places such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the United State Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Arlington Cemetery. Tour President George Washington¡¯s Estate and Gardens located in Mount Vernon on the shores of the Potomac River.

More of the United States¡¯ history can be observed touring Virginia¡¯s Northern Neck adjacent to Maryland¡¯s southern border. The George Washington National Monument Birthplace showcases colonial American farm life. Sixteen historic museums are scattered throughout the Northern Neck which stretches from Fredericksburg, Virginia to the Chesapeake Bay. Fishing, boating, and water sports are popular recreational activities on the bay. Enjoy the outdoors kayaking or canoeing on the tidal creeks and ponds. Drink wine and sample local flavors at one of Virginia¡¯s eighty wineries. Shop and dine on fresh seafood in one of the quaint villages throughout the Northern Neck. Enjoy birds such as bald eagles drawn to the Rappahannock River at the Voorhees Nature Preserve, about forty-five minutes east of Fredericksburg. Walk up to four miles of self-guided trails and enjoy a picnic. Visit the adjacent Westmoreland Berry Farm to obtain and your map and taste fabulous berries and other fresh fruits.

Virginia¡¯s capitol city is about two and a half hours south of Baltimore. Richmond is a progressive city with colonial roots. Tour the white Virginia Capitol Building designed by Thomas Jefferson. Take a cruise on the James River which runs right through downtown. You¡¯ll see riders on the James River on anything from rafts to kayaks to antique steamrollers. Twenty miles north of Richmond, set in the rural wooded terrain of the ¡®Old Dominion¡¯ state is the fun amusement park, Kings Dominion. Ride one of twelve roller coasters, multiple water rides, or other family attractions.

Another popular amusement park in Virginia is Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. The family friendly park features an Old World theme as visitors seemingly travel throughout Europe and can ride more than thirty-five rides. Williamsburg, Virginia is about three hours south of Maryland. Colonial Williamsburg is a large interesting area to explore with guided walking tours available. No cars are allowed in the colonial area to maintain the authentic atmosphere. Jamestown and Yorktown are the two other cities to visit to complete Virginia¡¯s historic triangle.

A different glimpse into early American life can be found in a day trip to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, about two hours north of Maryland. The special region, Lancaster County, boasts rolling farmland, quaint towns and farm markets selling homemade food and crafts. A scenic drive though old covered bridges is a popular way to explore Lancaster County. Pennsylvania Dutch Country still is home to population of Amish and their lifestyle can be respectfully observed driving the country roads, taking a buggy ride, or visiting the Amish Farm and House on Lincoln Highway.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sits just one hundred miles north of Baltimore and exudes history. Visit the Liberty Bell and then cross Chestnut Street to tour Independence Hall where both the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed. Run up the ¡®Rocky¡¯ steps to see the Philadelphia Museum of Art and walk south a few blocks on Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the stunning Rodin Museum. Enjoy the lively side of the ¡®City of Brotherly Love¡¯ munching on a Philly cheese steak at a local favorite like Pat¡¯s or Geno¡¯s, or socializing in a bar on buzzing South Street.

Near Maryland¡¯s eastern border, between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware Bay sits the city of Dover, many small towns, and several state parks and state forests. Dover is Delaware¡¯s capitol city boasting outstanding museums, many historic mansions and sights, slot machines and a horse racing track at Dover Downs, and NASCAR events at the Speedway. Start a tour of Dover at the historic, English-style town square, ¡®The Green.' The square is within walking distance of the old State House and many interesting buildings and museums.

Maryland¡¯s ¡®small wonder¡¯ neighbor to its north offer plenty of beauty and activity for its tiny size. Beach resort towns line Delaware¡¯s Atlantic Ocean shoreline. Southeastern Delaware¡¯s peaceful Fenwick Island has a quiet state park and isolated sand dunes in contrast to Maryland¡¯s active Ocean City beaches. Bethany Beach has a family-friendly atmosphere and a boardwalk for activities liking biking, walking, or bird-watching. Rehoboth is a busier Northern Delaware coast town with diverse shops, hotels, condominiums, cottages, restaurants, and night clubs. Rehoboth features several gay-owned and operated venues and is a popular destination for gay and lesbian travelers.

Maryland¡¯s mid-Atlantic location puts it within easy day trips of many diverse historic, recreational, and natural attractions. From impressive cities like Philadelphia and Washington D.C. to beautiful landscapes such as Virginia¡¯s Northern Neck and Delaware¡¯s beaches, or to a look back in time in Colonial Williamsburg or Lancaster County, exciting activities and interesting sights abound within three hours of Maryland.
