＆Virginia is for Lovers＊ as the states official slogan has it. True, there are some romantic getaways in the Blue Ridge Mountains 每 what could be cozier than a secluded cabin for two? But Virginia is perhaps best known as a destination for history lovers 每 the state is the site of the first English colony in the New World, and it also has a wealth of Civil War sites and museums. Virginia has an unmistakable English feel to parts of it, right down to that most English of pastimes, fox hunting, which flourishes in parts of the state.

     A good place to start any trip to Virginia is the area known as the ＆historic triangle＊ 每 the area consisting of Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. In this part of Virginia you can stand on the very spot where Washington defeated Cornwallis, and see the first settlements the English built, and recreations of the ships that they sailed in across the Atlantic. Williamsburg is one of the largest outdoor history museums in the world, as well as being a center for research and ongoing restoration. The town is more than just a restored colonial community 每 it is like stepping back to the 18th century. Apart from the hundreds of restored buildings, the town has shops, workhouses and taverns that faithfully recapture the colonial experience. The main street in Williamsburg is Duke of York Street which links the capitol building to the shops of Merchants Square. Don＊t be surprised if you stroll through the town and come across Thomas Jefferson giving a speech, a trial taking place at the courthouse, or women tending the vegetable gardens. Williamsburg is authentic down to the last detail 每 the British flag still flies over the capitol for most of the year. An unforgettable and unique dining experience is a meal in the King＊s Arms Tavern or one of the other inns. 

     Nearby, the smaller community of Jamestown is the site of the first English settlement and has more than 100 excavated building frames. You can watch demonstrations of brick making and glassblowing. The third corner of the ＆historic triangle＊ is Yorktown, the site of the last major battle of the revolution. You can tour the battlefield as well as an indoor exhibit of artifacts depicting the often harsh shipboard life. If all this history is too much, the Williamsburg area contains other attractions for visitors 每 theme parks such as Busch Gardens and Water Country, along with some excellent outlet shopping malls.

     The other main historical attraction in Virginia is Monticello, the home that Thomas Jefferson built over a period of 40 years. This architectural masterpiece may look somewhat familiar; it＊s the building depicted on the nickels in your pocket. The house and gardens have been restored as accurately as possible to their original appearance, nearly all the furniture in the house today was owned by the Jefferson family. 

     One of the most scenic roads in Virginia connects Williamsburg to the state capital of Richmond. The John Tyler Highway is lined with several plantation houses, which date from the day when this part of Virginia＊s livelihood depended on tobacco plantations. Several of the lovely old estates offer guided tours and a relaxed dining experience. Richmond itself is a big modern city, but contains several older districts, as well as the excellent Museum of the Confederacy, and an attractive canal sidewalk. You can also visit the very church where Patrick Henry shouted the famous words ＆Give me liberty, or give me death!＊ thereby causing Virginia to join the rebellion.

     Virginia saw more battles during the Civil War than any other state, and the state has many reminders of this turbulent time - museums, battlegrounds and historical markers. The names alone stir the imagination 每 Manassas, Fredericksburg and Appomattox. The town of Fredericksburg was the scene of several of the civil wars bloodiest battles, due to its strategic position midway between the rival capitals of Richmond and Washington. Fredericksburg makes a good base to tour several civil war battlefields in the area. Most of the battlefields are best visited by car 每 it＊s worth investing in an audio cassette tape offering a guided tour.  Apart from their civil war associations, Petersburg and Fredericksburg are both attractive towns with an old-fashioned feel and plenty of antique shopping. 

     Apart from history, it＊s the great outdoors that attracts many visitors to Virginia. The state contains the beautiful Shenandoah and Blue Ridge mountains, and for much of its length, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the western edge of the state. Throughout the Virginia mountains, there are excellent outdoor pursuits - hunting, fishing and hiking. One thing you will find in abundance of in the mountains is caverns.  Of the many caverns that are open to visitors, probably the most spectacular are the Luray Caverns - the most visited beneath-the-ground attraction in the Eastern United States. The cavern system has stone rooms 140 feet high, as well as a unique arrangement where music is played by tapping the stalactites at different pitches. Accommodation in the mountains, apart from the usual motels and bed and breakfasts consists largely of rustic cabins for rent. Several towns in the South West of Virginia promote themselves as ＆the gateway to the mountains＊; Roanoke, Lexington and Lynchburg are all attractive towns and make good bases for exploring the surrounding spectacular countryside. 

     For an attraction in the mountains that＊s definitely above ground, the Natural Bridge is worth a visit. The bridge was included in one of the first surveys of the state, carried out by George Washington who carved his initials into the stone. The town of Natural Bridge has grown to contain a waxworks display, a hotel and souvenir shops, but the spectacular bridge itself is still the main attraction.
