Vermont is a special place that doesn¡¯t lose its beauty as the seasons change. The colors don¡¯t fade as the temperatures get colder; instead, they seem to get more vibrant. In the summer and spring, Vermont lives up to its name which literally means ¡°Green Mountain.¡± In the autumn, the countryside comes alive with orange and gold, and in the winter months, the landscape is painted white with snow. No matter what time of the year, Vermont has something to offer every couple.

Just because you have to wear a jacket, doesn¡¯t mean you should put your vacation plans on hold. Autumn is one of the best times of the year to visit Vermont. What can be more romantic than taking a fall foliage drive and viewing the lush landscape as it changes into something spectacular? Mother Nature¡¯s colorful display begins in mid-September and lasts through the end of October, depending on which part of the state you happen to be visiting. The further north you drive, the earlier in the season you can view the changing colors. The show starts mid- to late September near the Canadian border, and hits a peak in late October further south. There are several routes that are favorites for fall foliage tours via car or bicycle and maps can be purchased specifically for this purpose. 

Hat and scarf weather shouldn¡¯t keep you from visiting Vermont either. The mountains here play host to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the country. The hills are high and the snow is plentiful. There are trails for skiers of all levels and accommodations for all lifestyles. Skiing isn¡¯t the only winter sport a couple can enjoy either. Ice fishing, sledding, snow tubing, winter hiking, snow shoeing and sleigh riding are just a few of the fun, cold weather activities in which two people can partake when visiting Vermont.

If you think Vermont only shines in the fall and winter, you couldn¡¯t be more wrong. Lovers of the great outdoors have known for years that Vermont offers only the best in canoeing, kayaking, fishing and biking. Vermont is also a popular destination for backpackers from all over the world. Trails include the Long Trail, which follows the Green Mountain Range, and the Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. With all these wonderful outdoor activities, it¡¯s almost a given that Vermont provides many excellent camping spots as well. There are many state, national and private parks for the couple who prefers sleeping under the stars to a night in a quaint bed & breakfast or country inn.

Once here, you¡¯ll see that Vermont is so much more than winter sports and drives through the country. There are many more attractions to enjoy together. The Vermont Teddy Bear Factory in Shelburne presents a whimsical tour where one can learn the history of the teddy bear and see how they¡¯re put together from start to finish. After the tour ends, you can even put together your own bear. The factory is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and New Year¡¯s Day.

Ben and Jerry¡¯s Ice Cream Factory located just outside of Waterbury also offers up a fun and educational tour. At the factory, one will view an 8-minute movie, learn how the company was founded, and watch the manufacturing process. The tour ends with delicious samples of the day.

The New England Maple Museum in Rutland is located in the heart of maple syrup country. Visitors to this museum can learn the history of maple sugaring by viewing murals, artifacts and historical photos. There¡¯s also a slide show and a demonstration of maple candy making. Samples of maple syrup and other local delicacies are available at the end of the tour. The factory is closed in January and February but reopens in mid-March.

Take a ride on the White River Flyer, a train offering four round-trip excursions to Norwich and the Montshire Museum of Science. While riding, one can enjoy views of the Connecticut River and White Mountain Foothills. At the White River Junction, one can shop, dine and visit an historic steam engine built in 1892. The Montshire Museum has 60 exhibits relevant to science, technology and nature.

If it¡¯s culture you¡¯re after, you¡¯ve come to the right place. Lovers of musical theater will enjoy the Vermont Opera Theater.  Located in Monpelier, the theater features local performers in opera, operetta and original programs. Opera workshops and classes are also offered. The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington hosts many events ranging from Broadway shows to ballet to musical events and more.

If a romantic getaway is what you¡¯re after, Vermont is surely the place to be. Visit one of the states many spas and retreats. Stay in an intimate country inn or bed and breakfast. Go antiquing or play a round of golf. Ride horses or bicycles on one of countless trails. Whether it¡¯s enjoying the great outdoors or visiting a historical museum, the Green Mountain State has something for everything.  In fact, a few days in Vermont will be enough to convince you of one thing¡­you¡¯ll want to return soon.
