The island of Malta is located in the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily. Chief among its cities is the ancient harbor town of Valletta. 

One of the first things that command attention as one approaches the harbor from the sea is the brilliantly colored and historically significant fishing fleet. These small vessels have plied the Mediterranean for centuries, braving the sometimes-fickle nature of the sea to return with fish to be sold in the markets. Colored with bright yellow, orange, red, purple, and turquoise, the boats fill the harbor at their anchorages, waiting for the next early morning to again make their way to the sea.

Once inside the harbor, the age of the city becomes evident by its defensive, sand colored stone walls, some of which were erected before the birth of Christ. From this vantage point, the view is a feast for the eyes in any direction one chooses to look. Enormous churches and cathedrals, testament to the influence of the passing Crusaders, mark the city with their towering spires. Small, neat, two and three story stone houses line the streets in tightly packed clusters. Private balconies adorned with plants and decorative wrought-iron railings make even a casual stroll along the streets a pleasant mid-day diversion.

Once embarked from the harbor and into the town, the visitor to Valletta has a myriad of choices to select from with regard to sight-seeing. The narrow, winding roads leading away from the harbor travel upwards to the hills and plateaus of the inland areas. Among the premier attractions for the art lover and aficionado of aesthetics are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Cathedral Museum.

While on the topic of museums, Valletta hosts one of the top maritime museums in the Mediterranean. Located on the waterfront, with the colorful fishing boats filling the bay immediately in front, the Malta Maritime Museum displays artifacts dating back to the first inhabitants of the island to the rich British influence that still permeates the Maltese traditions of the sea. 

For the tourist with an interest in history, Valletta is tough to beat for its attractions. The National Museum of Archeology displays artifacts from as far back as the period of 5200 B.C. and is housed in one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Valletta, constructed after the Great Siege in the late sixteenth century. There are few places on the island where an event of some historical significance hasn¡¯t occurred. From the fortresses of the Knights of Saint John, the influences of the Italian Baroque, the British rule of the island, to the Nazi air raids of World War II, Valletta is literally a physical composite of its history.

Outside of the realm of the historic, Valletta has more than its share of romantic charm. Comfortable outside cafes offering the culinary fare of the Mediterranean line the streets of Valletta, where patrons can bask in the brilliant sun and blue skies. Small shops throughout the city, but more numerous along the waterfront, offer everything from typical tourist trinkets to art and beautiful hand crafts. From walkways along the edge of the plateau, tourists can marvel at the breath-taking views of the sea, where the sun is brilliant but the temperature quite comfortable with the Mediterranean breezes blowing across the coast.

Whatever the interest or the reason for visiting Valletta, the history and sheer beauty of the city and the island it is built upon offer much more than can be seen in mere weeks.
