Accomplishing a fly-fishing vacation can be easy, actually, the opportunity to fly fish on vacation is easy to plan and go on, but the ability to catch the fish is up to the angler. A vacation planned around fly-fishing can take place in one area, such as a specific river or the individual may decide to concentrate his efforts on a particular state, or the vacation may include many states. State that are fly-fishing friendly include Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Florida, South Carolina, Florida, North Carolina, Maine, Idaho, Colorado, Georgia, Vermont, Utah, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Louisiana, Washington, Texas, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Arkansas, Tennessee, Michigan and New Hampshire.
To plan a fly-fishing vacation, the time of year the vacation is to be taken is also important. Three out of the four seasons are prime fly-fishing seasons. These seasons are spring, summer and fall, with summer and fall producing more positive results than summer. The reason that spring and fall are more productive is due to the insect hatches that are happening in those seasons as well as the cooler temperatures of the water. Summer does not have many hatches occurring and the water temperatures heat up too much for the species of fish generally caught while fly-fishing. In the winter, just the opposite is true, the waters get too cold for the fish and for the anglers, plus the insect hatches have often finished by the time winter rolls around.
After the location and season have been determined, a fly-fishing vacation will require a few necessary items. Fly fishing rods and flies are the first items on any fly-fishing vacation list. Flies needed would include dry flies, wet flies, nymphs and streamers. Even the location and season that the vacation takes place is important to determining the type of flies that will be used. After deciding on rods and flies, other items needed on this vacation are: a fly box, a vest, forceps for extracting flies, a net for catching the fish, a hook sharpener, pinch on floats for strike indicators and twist leads, polarized sun glasses, waders with felt soles or boots with felt, a hat and insect repellent.
Following fishing rules and regulations is important so becoming familiar with them is important as well as getting all licenses needed for the locations that are included on a fly-fishing vacation. Each state has its own rules and regulations governing the bodies of water in that state. Becoming aware of these rules will keep the angler legal. However, if attempting to catch a world record is on the itinerary, the angler will need to follow all the rules and regulations set by The International Game Fish Association (IGAF). To consider any fish caught as a world record holder, the angler must have followed all the rules set forth by the IGFA. The rules set by the IGFA include stipulations for the line, leader, rod, reel, hooks, lures, gaffs and nets as well as other rules governing the angler and his techniques. There are also specific actions that will disqualify a potential world record catch.
A fly-fishing vacation is very possible with careful planning. The fly-fishing angler can even choose to visit a location and hire a guide; this is especially nice if the angler is not an experienced fly-fisherman, as the guide will supply all the necessary equipment as well as the knowledge needed for landing the perfect fishing vacation. Whether the angler chooses the guided route or the route of doing it on his own, it can be a very enjoyable vacation. |
