With over two thirds of the earth underwater there is an exciting world of marine life, caves and shipwrecks hiding just below the surface. Many of the best vacation resorts are situated on the water¡¯s edge and offer an exciting experiment and activity for young and old to discover this hidden world ¨C scuba diving.  Though many people feel the marine world is beyond their reach, a vacation is the perfect time to splurge and try something new.  For little expense and a few hours of your vacation time, you can take a scuba adventure that will leave a lasting impression and give you a taste of the scuba world.  Decide from that point if scuba diving is a hobby you¡¯d like to continue.

Many seaside resorts and even those near or involved with aquariums or sea life, offer scuba packages.  These packages are wonderful for first time divers as the planning of boat schedules, equipment, insurance, training, documentation and even the dive place are selected and arranged for you.  Since certification is required before scuba diving can take place, be certain that training is included with the package and that you can dedicate your vacation time for this class.  Resort diving packages for the beginner usually include training for a supervised dive not a full certification course, as this takes some time to achieve.  Regulations for resort diving courses may include an age restriction and common sense dictates good health and basic swimming skills.  The supervised dive training will give you the academics of diving, safety procedures and the buddy system, and will get you comfortable, in and out of the water, with the equipment.  Depending upon the details of the class, anticipate at least an hour and more likely, three-hour training before actually diving.  The dive itself will be supervised by certified divers and instructors and will depend on weather conditions.

Many resorts will take you to the very best local areas to view shipwrecks, coral reefs, turtles or other marine life.  As a beginner diver you¡¯ll be getting a taste of the very best just to tingle your taste buds.  If permissible, be certain to bring an underwater camera to show off the fun and world below.  Be certain to heed the training class information and follow instructions carefully and succinctly, as scuba diving can be dangerous.  One person¡¯s accident can lead to all divers returning to shore so, feel trustworthy not only with the instruction but with other vacation divers in the group.  Don¡¯t be afraid to speak up and voice your concerns, good resorts will address your concerns or reschedule if necessary.

If you desire a total certification or wish to participate in vacation packages that require this, look into local dive shops, Y centers and town programs for certification before going on vacation.  Participates for an Open Water Diver Certification, the most common, must be at least fifteen years of age.  A Junior Open Water Certification can be obtained for those younger than fifteen.  Certification can take some time to achieve depending upon your free time and dedication but its well worth the effort.  Again, good health and basic swimming skills are necessary.  Certification prices will vary but budget a few hundred dollars.  Then decide if renting or purchasing equipment is for you.

If you find your vacation scuba adventure addicting there are many other skills and specialties to incorporate beyond full certification such as underwater photography, deep diving, wreck or cave diving, spear fishing and even treasure discovery.  The fun and thrill is what you make of it.
