Luggage is something many people use for a weekend getaway or annual vacation. It is not something most people use on a regular basis. Luggage can be rather pricey, so it should be appropriately cared for. When good quality luggage has been well cared for, it can last for many years. Properly storing your luggage will ensure that it is in good condition and ready to go next time you decide to take a trip. 

Storing luggage can be a problem for those who have limited space. If you do not use your luggage on a regular basis, consider using it to store seasonal clothing. Pack the clothing you are not using neatly inside your luggage, and store it under beds or on upper closet shelves. Suitcases can also be used to store extra blankets or pillows. Unused luggage is also a great place to hide Christmas gifts. Snoopers will never think to look inside stored luggage. These are just a few of the many things you can conveniently store inside unused luggage. Anything you do not use on a regular basis can be safely tucked away and stored in this manner.  

Another suggestion for those with limited space is to store graduating sizes of suitcases within each other. This way several pieces of luggage won¡¯t take up space unnecessarily. Place the next to the largest suitcase inside the largest one. Place graduating sizes inside the rest of the suitcases until you all you have to find room for is the largest one. Store it under a bed or out of the way on a closet shelf. You¡¯ll hardly miss the space the suitcase requires.

Before putting away your luggage after a trip, make sure it¡¯s completely cleaned out. Check the furthest recesses of every pocket and storage area. You may be surprised at what you find. Small items often disappear into the creases and crevices of suitcases. 

After making sure there is nothing inside, use a vacuum with a nozzle attachment to remove any crumbs, debris, or dust particles. Luggage can harbor dust mites, bacteria, and other undesirable pests. Crumbs from food wrappers and other perishable items can become moldy and create permanent odors and stains within luggage. Be sure to vacuum the crevices thoroughly. This is where crumbs, dust, and other debris usually end up. 

If your luggage is made of waterproof material, go over it inside and out with a damp rag. Dry the luggage with a clean rag, and leave it open to dry completely. Set it in the sun to give it a fresh clean scent, and to speed drying time. 

When the luggage is thoroughly dry, place a nicely scented sachet or a small paper sack of cat litter or charcoal inside each separate section. The cat litter or charcoal will absorb any unwanted odors and leave your luggage smelling fresh and clean. It¡¯s also a good idea to save the silica packets that come with shoes and many other types of merchandise. These packets absorb excess moisture, and they are worth keeping and using again. Put several packets inside the pockets and zippered areas of your luggage. These useful packets will help keep mold and mildew from forming.

How you care for your luggage will determine how long it lasts. Even top-quality luggage won¡¯t last long if it isn¡¯t taken care of. Properly store your luggage as suggested, and it¡¯s likely to last a lifetime.
