Much has changed in Mongolia since the days of Genghis Khan¡¯s pillaging and the communist regime that ruled for many years. Mongolia is one of today¡¯s hidden gems to visit. You can enjoy this fascinating land by foot, horseback, or jeep. From amazing natural wonders to a historical history filled with colorful tales and adventures, Mongolia is full of enchantment.
Mongolia lies between forty and fifty degrees of latitude. Its climate is best compared to that of Montana¡¯s which also lies on this latitude. While it is nearly three times as large as Montana, the climate, vegetation, and wildlife is strikingly similar. In the country you can see mountains topped with white snow just as easily as you see open plains of grass.
Mongolians are, for the most part, herders that roam the countryside. Some the most popular livestock are cattle, horses, goats, camels, and sheep. Because of the nomadic tendency of Mongolians, the diet consists heavily of the livestock people travel with. Meats and cheese rank high in the Mongolia food pyramid. If you visit this vast country be prepared to feed off the land at the many places you intend on visiting.
Undur Dov is roughly forty-five minutes, by car, from the major city, Ulaanbaatar. Here a guest will stay in Mongolian gers, which are countryside guest homes. Undur Dov is best explored by foot via hiking trails or on horseback. Here the visitor will no doubt try the national drink, fermented mare¡¯s milk, at the guest house for a supplement to a Mongolia meal. Another spot to visit is Kharakhorm. It is the ancient capital of the county and contains much history. Turkish monuments adorn the region, as does monastery¡¯s and ancient burial grounds.
The Gobi Desert is another interesting part of the Mongolian landscape. It is a vast region of desert and desert steppe. It covers roughly thirty percent of the country. Here there are many different and unusual types of wildlife to observe, including snow leopards, camels, wild asses, and gazelles. Dinosaur bones have been discovered here as well. It is very extreme on the Gobi, however, so this must be taken into account if you plan on visiting in the summer when it is very hot, or the winter, when it is very cold. The spring months are the best to make the trip to the Gobi for nature and landscape admiring. If the flatness of a desert does not appeal to you will not be disappointed by the Gobi. In the center of the Gobi you will find Yolin Am, which is the valley in the Zunn Saikhan Mountain. It is in the center of the Gobi, and has breathtaking views of rocky walls and cascading waterfalls.
While most of the terrain is open, rugged, and countryside, there are urban centers as well. In Ulaanbaatar there are westernized hotels, modern stores and restaurants for the traveler desiring a reprieve from the simple and rougher accommodations on the countryside. The city is located in central east Mongolia and spreads east to west along a great valley. It is split into six districts, several sub districts, and even more micro districts. While there are street markings, there are so many streets and ways that the taxi drivers sometimes get confused themselves. The city has over sixty hotels which range from fifteen to four-hundred US dollars a night. There are a plethora of museums and educational facilities to visit or tour. Getting around the city is quite easy since there is a good trolley and bus system. Microbuses run by private companies are also available throughout the metropolitan area. While it is not encouraged, it is said that Ulaanbaatar is one of the only places in the world where hitchhiking is very safe. Watch out though, as the driver will charge you just as a taxi would.
So you are sold on Mongolia, but how do you get there? Flying and the Trans-Siberian Railway are the only two options for getting to Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar, the capital, is the main hub for transportation. MIAT Mongolian Airlines flies regularly from Berlin, Moscow, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo. |
