Nobody wants to think about having their vacation ruined by unforeseen circumstances. Many people opt to purchase travel insurance that covers a variety of problems from sudden illness to lost luggage or a missed flight. Buying travel insurance can be a very smart investment, especially if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of having to use it. But how easy is it to make a claim once you¡¯ve returned from your vacation?
Here are some tips to make filing a claim with your travel insurance carrier easier and less stressful.
-When you buy your travel insurance, read the fine print. Find out ahead of time exactly what it DOES and DOES NOT cover. For instance, some policies cover acts of terrorism that could force you to cancel a trip, while others do not. Also, make sure you ask about emergency services. Often, there is a procedure to follow to make sure that you are covered.
-If you or a family member becomes sick, is hurt or passes away, make sure you seek medical help. If you lose your luggage, file a police report and get a copy of it. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, get something in writing from the airline. It is important to have anything that happens confirmed by documentation from professionals. Filing a claim is going to be much easier if you have the paperwork to back up your claims.
-Follow the rules dictated by your travel insurance policy. If it requires you to get pre-certification for hospital admittance, do it. If you must call the company¡¯s customer service when something happens, make sure you follow through. If you have followed the rules set by your carrier, they cannot dispute it.
-Observe any time limits. Many travel insurance policies have a time limit on claims. Often, they are around 28-31 days after you return from your vacation. Check your policy and ask if you have any questions about it.
-Most companies require you to ask for a claim form. They can often be obtained online or they will be mailed to you after calling customer service. Fill out the form completely and send the original relevant documentation (medical forms, receipts, police report, booking invoice, etc.) with it. Make sure you keep a copy of everything. Send it back by registered mail so that you will have proof that you sent it and do it in a timely manner.
-Most carriers will now allow for eligible claims to be paid either to the provider, such as a hospital or doctor, or to the insured person. Remember to specify whom you want the money to be paid to, whether it is to reimburse you or another party.
-All travel insurance companies insist that their company will handle your claim quickly and appropriately. Not all of them do, however. Keep in mind that often the company that handles claims is a completely different department than the company that you purchased the insurance from. Often, if the claim is under $1,000 it is handled much more quickly and smoothly than more expensive claims.
-Most claims are handled well. Once you submit a claim form and other paperwork, it is usually only a matter of time until you receive a check. However, if you do have problems, the key is persistence. Don¡¯t give up. Call the customer service department until your claim is settled to your satisfaction. |
