Traveling with a baby might sound like such a logistical nightmare that you may decide it is easier to stay home. You have to worry about diapers, food, and changes of clothes and keeping a baby happy while he is trapped inside of an airplane, train, or car. It can seem like a pretty daunting adventure but there are many things you can do to make your trip less stressful and smoother for everyone involved.
If you are planning a trip on an airplane with your baby you will want to buy him his own ticket. While most airlines will permit babies to be held on your lap it is very dangerous. A small baby can be torn from your grasp in a crash or even in rough turbulence. The safest place for your baby is in a child safety seat properly attached with a seat belt. You can take your baby out of the seat when the pilot turns off the fasten seat belt light to play with him and give him a break. Most airlines will let you board in advance to give you time to get situated and stow your bags and stroller. Give your baby a pacifier or a bottle to suck on when the plane is taking off and landing to relieve ear pressure and try to fly during times when your baby would normally be asleep. Bring plenty of toys and snacks to keep baby happy when he gets bored. Always make sure you bring plenty of bottles, extra clothes, diapers, wipes, food, and pain relief medication. You never know when the plane might be delayed and you will be forced to spend an extra hour or two on board.
If you are traveling with a baby in a car always allow extra time for stops. A baby must always be contained in a car seat while a car is moving so stop every hour and a half to two hours to let the baby out of the seat for a while. Take advantage of the times when the baby is napping to make time on your trip. Have lots of toys and snacks available for your baby and if possible have one adult sit in the back seat with him to entertain and keep the baby company. Disposable wipes are a must on a car trip with baby. Keep the wipes handy and bring some plastic bags to keep garbage in between stops. A portable DVD player can be a lifesaver if your baby likes to watch certain movies. Playing baby¡¯s favorite CD¡¯s on your car stereo can soothe him and might even put him to sleep. Bring some new toys that your baby hasn¡¯t seen before and give them to him one at a time. The best time to travel with a baby in a car is at night since there isn¡¯t anything interesting to look at and they will be lulled to sleep by the sound of the car on the road.
Traveling by train can offer a bit more freedom of movement than a car. You can get up and walk around with your baby and you won¡¯t have to worry about frequent stops. Most trains will have facilities to warm up bottles or food for you. There are baby changing facilities on trains and you won¡¯t have to worry about disposing of dirty diapers. If you are traveling long distances it may be worth it to reserve a sleeper car for your family. A private car will keep your baby from getting overwhelmed by other passengers and the other passengers will be less bothered by your baby¡¯s cries.
The least desirable mode of travel with a baby is the bus. When you travel on a bus you do not have the option of stopping to rest and the room to move around is very limited. It will be difficult to change your baby and feed him. A bus provides very close quarters and it will very likely be a long and uncomfortable ride for you and your baby.
As long as you prepare ahead of time and bring the essential items of care and entertainment along you can have a pleasant journey with your baby. Babies are quite adaptable travelers as long as their basic needs are met and you don¡¯t let them get too bored. |
