It's time once again to hit the road. You have been looking forward to the trip and you are packed and almost ready to take off. Now, all you have to do is make sure your vehicle is as ready as you are.
Following this checklist will help keep you safe and help you have a more enjoyable trip:
-Check your tire pressure and make sure treads are in good condition. If a tire needs to be replaced, take care of it before you get on the road. It is better to spend the money on a tire now, than to end up having a flat or a blow out. Dealing with a tire on the road can be expensive and blowouts can be very dangerous.
-Make sure your spare tire is in good condition. You don't want to end up finding out your spare is no good when you are on the side of the road in the middle of the night. Buy a new spare if necessary, and make sure it is properly inflated before leaving.
-Test your windshield wipers and install new wiper blades if needed. Make sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid as well. It is also a good idea to clean your windshield and rear window thoroughly before beginning a trip, and to bring along window cleaner and paper towels.
-Check the oil, or have it checked along with other fluids and filters. It is probably best to go ahead and have an oil change if you plan to cover a lot of miles. Ask for a fluid and filter check too. This should include transmission fluid, air filter, fuel filter etc. Clean filters not only help a vehicle achieve optimal performance, but they also help reduce the amount of gas you use.
-Make sure all of your lights including brake lights and turn signals are functioning properly. Replace any bulbs or fuses that are burnt out. These items are important for your safety as well as the safety of other drivers.
-Make sure you driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance are somewhere handy. If an accident should occur, it is best to be prepared. In addition, if you happen to get pulled over, you will want these items readily accessible for the officer.
-Don't forget emergency items like a first aid kit, bottled water, a flashlight, jumper cables, a jack and a tire iron. You should also bring a long a few tools for minor repairs, such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and a pair of pliers.
-Bring along extra clothing, water, and snacks. The weather can change at a moment's notice and you will be glad you brought a jacket or an extra shirt if temperatures drop or you get rained on.
If you find yourself stranded due to car trouble, snacks and drinking water will come in handy. It is also a good idea to keep a blanket or two in the vehicle, and if you are traveling with a baby, make sure you pack plenty of extra diapers, clothing, bottles, and formula. |
