Nepal is not a typical vacation spot for most travelers. Nepal offers amazing and unique sights and experiences that many of the typical traveling destinations lack. Nepal has been open to tourism for just over fifty years and has seen a rise in visitation.
One of the main tourist magnets in Nepal is the beast of a hill, called Mount Everest. Mount Everest is, perhaps, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nepal. Everest is truly magnificent. The summit of the mountain, which is the world¡¯s tallest, is a goal that many climbers have looked to reach and surmount. While climbing to the top is an impressive feat accomplished by only the brave and bold enough to try, you can enjoy Everest at altitudes much lower than the highest peak. While Everest does not offer hiking trails to visitors there are many hiking routes in the surrounding Himalayan Mountains that offer stunning views of the great mountain. You can, for a fee, embark on a day, week, or ten day trek up to view some of the impressive sights if you are the adventurous type. If you do opt for the hike the best times of the year to go are the early spring and the fall.
While Mount Everest may be the most popular attraction in Nepal, there are many towns, cities, and countryside villages that are worth checking out. Kathmandu is the country¡¯s main city. It is the metropolitan capital of Nepal, and any visitor will know this when he or she steps onto the bustling streets. In addition to a thriving economy, there is a plethora of amazingly constructed temples, shrines, and ancient palaces concentrated in Durbar Square, located in the thick of the city. Here the tourist can engage in shopping, while viewing impressive architecture laced in Hindu charm. Most tourists will want to stay in the city for at least a night, if not several. There are many hotels to choose from that offer a range of accommodations. One of the more popular spots is the Hotel Yak & Yeti. The Hotel Yak & Yeti is on Durbar Marg, which is just east of the Royal Palace. It is one of the nicer hotels in the city, as prices range from one-hundred and eighty to two-hundred and fifty dollars a night.
Bhaktapur, located in the Kathmandu Valley, is also a wonderful place to visit. It is a small town with untouched and authentic medieval architecture to marvel at. Unlike its neighboring city, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur does not have the hustle and bustle of a main metropolitan area, and the tourism, while present, is kept at a lower level of fervor. The town has a legacy of preservation, initiated by the Germans in the 1970s, that has allowed it to remain relatively unaltered. A visitor will be able to view pagoda-style Hindu shrines and impressive, yet simple courtyards amongst the various houses and edifices. The Golden Gate, which is made entirely of brass, is another monument to marvel at as you walk through the twisting and narrow roads that lead into the district where craftsmen and the town¡¯s potters carry-on their unchanged professions and traditions.
The Royal Chitwan National Park is a spot not to miss as you travel Nepal. This area, which covers roughly three hundred and sixty square miles, was formerly the private hunting grounds of the king of Nepal and his palace guests. Now this region is one of the best protected forests and grassland acreage in Asia. There are several ways to enjoy this untouched land¡ªby jeep, by foot, or by safari boat. In this vastness of nature you will find a variety of wildlife. There are rhinoceros, elephants, monkeys, exotic birds and reptiles, even the nearly extinct Bengal tiger. Of course all these animals are best scene under the guidance of professional guides from the region. There are several agencies and private tour guides that can get you around the park safely. Do your research before you choose a guide, however, since you will want to be in safe hands during your expedition.
If there is room in your itinerary for more sightseeing you will want to trek to The Kingdom of Mustang. This area is surrounded by Tibet on three sides and governed by a Tibetan royal family. It is one of the last kingdoms of ancient times still under Tibetan monarch rule. Inside the walls is a thriving and self-sufficient town. Here you will see ancient monasteries still in working conditions, along with a busy market-economy. Getting to Mustang can only be done through a licensed trekking company and a government officer accompanies all voyagers
Nepal, though truly a distant and somewhat unlikely destination, proves to have much to offer that most typical vacation locations lack. While you will likely enjoy any time spent in this majestic country the vastness of the land demands a sufficient stay of at least two to three weeks to fully appreciate it. |
