Las Vegas is best known as the City of Sin. While the Nevadan destination does have its fair share of sleaze, tackiness, and cheesiness, the city has more to offer. Las Vegas can be enjoyed by the single bachelor or bachelorette out to find thrills, college students heading west for a new experience, couples seeking a romantic getaway, and even families for a vacation. Your experience in Vegas is determined by what you want to find and how well you do in pursuing it.
Getting to Las Vegas is made simple with all the deals airlines and hotels offer to attract the big gamblers. Online agencies offer last-minute deals that are sometimes worth waiting for, while regular airlines also have special Vegas deals. In most cases you have the option of adding a hotel to your airfare deal. This can simplify your trip, although you may be able to find better deals by going directly through the hotel. Just be sure that when you make the reservation you ask that you receive the lowest price for the check-in date. If you do not ask, you will not be given the discount. The hotels in Vegas range from cheap motels to extravagant luxury hotels. The Strip, which is the main drag containing the majority of the casinos, is a popular spot for tourists to stay on. Although it is noisy and bustling, it is a great place to stay if you enjoy being in the thick of things. You can get a great deal on a hotel room at many of these places, particularly if you plan on spending a lot of money at their casinos. Circus Circus, the Stratosphere, and the Sahara, are three budget hotels for those looking to save money for gambling, the Excalibur, Imperial, and Tropicana are three mid-range hotels, and the top notch facilities include the Bellagio, The Venetian, and of course, the Aladdin. Rooms in the last three hotels can cost up to six-hundred a night, however, you may find yourself striking a deal in the hotel lobby as a walk-in. Anything is possible in Vegas. If the Strip is not your style you can find quieter residence downtown and miles surrounding the Strip. Old Vegas is an area that is considered run-down, and may not be the best place to stay if you are concerned about aesthetics and a lower safety level.
Once you have booked your flight and room, you need to set the rest of your itinerary. You will want to plan on spending at least a day or two wandering through the many hotel casinos. Even if you do not gamble there are plenty of things to do¡ªdrink free beverages as they are handed out, enjoy a show, go shopping, and eat. There are literally thousands of places to eat in Vegas, and many of them are open twenty-four hours a day. The buffets in some of the hotels are very extravagant and reasonably priced. There are high-end restaurants catering to the couples that visit Las Vegas and family styled establishments speckled throughout the city.
Along with touring the hotels, you will want to try some of what the casino has to offer. There are plenty of slots all over the city, and the hotels have a plethora of tables to choose from. It may be a good idea to brush up on your gaming before you head out west and actually want to try to make some money. Even if you do not win earnings if you are playing the slots or if you are at a table waitresses will come by and offer your free drinks and sometimes, appetizers. Enjoy, but don¡¯t let these freebies take away from your game.
Shows are also as abundant in Vegas as food and drink. ¡°The Legends¡± show at the Imperial is popular, as is the Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio and Treasure Island.
In addition to individual shows, each of the hotels has a special theme. For instance, Circus Circus has a genuine circus inside the hotel, and the gambling floor is full of real-life clowns. The Stratosphere hotel has a tower that gives a spectacular aerial view of the city. You can find a volcano and an aquarium at the Mirage, while you will be entertained by non-stop Mardi Gras in Rio¡¯s Masquerade Village. For the kids there is bowling at the Orleans, the Gold Coast, and the Santa Fe, a Discovery Museum downtown, and plenty of fun to be found at the Circus. For the older visitors who have outgrown cotton-candy there is a Star Trek Museum and an Elvis Museum to check out.
Once you have had your fill of Vegas you may want to venture out to see some of the nearby scenes. Red Rock Canyon is located twenty-miles from downtown Vegas. Here you will find stunning views into an ancient Canyon of red and tan bedrock. Hoover Dam is located less than one hour away from the Strip. This seventy-six foot structure sits impressively on the Colorado River. It is one of the tallest dams in the world. If you make the trip out to Vegas you do not want to miss seeing this architectural wonder. Also located in the surrounding areas are the Valley of Fire State Park, and Lake Mead Park. Here you can enjoy a bit of nature before you venture back into the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
From Elvis and bowling to fancy restaurants and high-speed gambling, Las Vegas has it all. For the solo tourist to the bachelor party, the city has plenty to offer. |
