Contrary to what the rest of the country thinks, Buffalo is not known only for being buried under 10 feet of snow every winter.  In fact, Buffalo¡¯s summers are beautiful, the fall is brilliantly colored and the springs bring some of the most beautiful flora found anywhere.  Not to mention, Buffalo was one of the most important cities in the nation.  Situated inland on the Erie Canal, Buffalo used to be one of the most industrious cities this side of the Mississippi.

In 1908 Buffalo brewers made beer enough to flow over Niagara Falls for a full two minutes and at one point in the early 20th century Buffalo had the highest per capita percentage of breweries to people in all of the country.  Most of these brewers were out of business by the 1920s but some of Buffalo¡¯s beer history can still be toured today.  One of the largest, East Buffalo Brewing Company, has a historical tour through the hey-day of brewing in Buffalo and will refer you to its cousins throughout the city.   

Fire Fighting in Buffalo dates back further than the city itself (which is nearing its 250th birthday!) and an entire museum of fire fighting can be found at the Buffalo Fire Fighting Historical Museum  The museum traces the significant fires and the growth of the city from the early 1800s.  Tour some of the oldest fire fighting apparatus and enjoy old photographs of the city as it used to be.

The Broadway Market dates back to the mid 19th century and continues to be well loved by Buffalo¡¯s old Polish center.  Found along Broadway Ave in downtown Buffalo, the Market is a huge indoor arena of vendors selling dried meats, butter lambs, poultry, sweeter than sweet bakery items and gets most crowded around Easter time.  Family owned businesses passed down from generation to generation work at the Market and if you¡¯re looking to absorb some authentic Buffalo history, ask anyone in the Market what it ¡°used¡± to be like in Buffalo and be prepared to get an hours with of history about one family!  

The Albright Knox, a prominent museum found in downtown Buffalo on Elmwood Avenue.  The Knox boasts one of the world¡¯s largest collections of international paintings, sculptures and architectural models.  Housing originals by Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Matisse and Van Gogh, the Knox regularly hosts traveling exhibits of the nation¡¯s up and coming artists, as well as local and regional work display with just as much pride.  A quaint cafe and a gift shop filled with unique items suitable for any friend or family member, the Knox is a spot not to miss.      

The Buffalo Museum of Science has a little bit of everything and regularly hosts interactive exhibits meant to encourage educational experiences for children and adults alike.  Travel through hallways of ancient Egypt, China and the Middle East, peer in on mummified relatives, petrified forests and gold and gems from lands before, the Buffalo Museum of Science boasts the largest Kodiak bears in the world!

Finally Herschell¡¯s Carousel Factory Museum is America¡¯s ONLY carousel factory and must not be missed on your visit to Buffalo.  Fun for all ages artifacts include a completely functional merry-go-round dating from 1916 along with numerous well-kept but historical amusement park rides.  Each and every installation can be used as it was when it was for the public, and visitors are encouraged to take a ride back through the years on any and all of the museum¡¯s preserved rides.  Featuring lovely miniaturized trinkets in the gift shop, Herschell¡¯s is one of Buffalo¡¯s best kept secrets!
