Kauai is probably the most romantic spot in all of Hawaii because of its lush tropical landscape and breathtaking scenery. You will truly feel that you have found paradise amidst the island¡¯s white sand beaches, fern grottoes, cascading waterfalls and exotic rain forests. Its dramatic beauty has served as the backdrop for many movies and television shows, including South Pacific, Jurassic Park and Fantasy Island. There¡¯s no better place to relax, unwind and enjoy a romantic getaway from the rest of the world.

One of Kauai¡¯s most impressive natural wonders is Waimea Canyon.  This immense canyon measures one mile wide, ten miles long, and more than 3,500 feet deep. Mark Twain referred to Waimea as ¡°the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,¡± and its dramatic red earth gorges and colorful green walls are truly a sight to behold. You can opt for a scenic drive around the rim or take a hike to some of the many lookouts that afford wonderful views of the canyon, but the best, and most romantic, way to experience Waimea Canyon is from the air. Several companies offer helicopter tours of the canyon, allowing you to observe cliffs, valleys and cascading waterfalls that are simply not accessible by land. Flying over these hidden spots allows you to see all that the island has to offer and lets you fully appreciate the breathtaking sights that nature has created here.

Another outdoor attraction well worth visiting is Kilauea Lighthouse, situated on a narrow peninsula at the northernmost point of the island. It is a beautiful location from which to bird watch, enjoy amazing views of the steep cliffs dropping dramatically down to the ocean, and get a feel for what it was like nearly a century ago when the lighthouse was first built. Near the lighthouse is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, home to a large population of nesting seabirds. This is the only such sanctuary in the islands, with residents that include the endangered nene (Hawaiian goose), egret, albatross, and the great frigate bird with an impressive eight foot wingspan. 

For a unique Hawaiian adventure, another place you should definitely plan on visiting is the Fern Grotto. This amazing outdoor wonder, composed of lava rock and covered with tropical ferns, is accessible only by water. To get there, you take a flat bottom riverboat up the Wailua River, the only navigable river in Hawaii. On the forty minute trip you will experience amazing scenery, with tropical grasses lining the river and the imposing Mt. Waialeale visible in the background. Upon arriving at the grotto, you are greeted with a serenade by Hawaiian musicians performing traditional songs accompanied by guitars. The acoustics in this natural outdoor amphitheater are amazing and the sounds of the native Hawaiian music echo magically in the beautiful surroundings. 

If you feel like taking a break from sightseeing, a great way to relax and unwind is by grabbing some snorkel gear and floating in the warm, gentle waters of one of the island¡¯s protected lagoons. The coral reefs on Kauai are home to hundreds of species of fish, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world. Drifting in the beautiful calm waters watching schools of brightly colored fish swim beneath you is both calming and invigorating and definitely a romantic way to spend an afternoon. Some of the best snorkeling on Kauai can be found at Poipu Beach Park and Ludgate Park near Wailua, a man-made lagoon filled with parrotfish and other exotic sea life.

After spending your days experiencing some of Kauai's natural wonders, nothing makes your getaway complete like a romantic sunset picnic, followed by some nighttime stargazing. There are many beautiful parks and beaches to choose from, but one of the best is Polihale Beach on Kauai's northwest shore. A favorite spot for artists because of its brilliant colors, it¡¯s also the perfect place from which to enjoy a secluded Hawaiian sunset picnic. Bring a blanket and some local culinary delicacies with you and dine under the clear Hawaiian sky, where you can see billions of stars light up the night.
