Need ideas for an extra-special evening with that special someone? Here are five suggestions for a memorable date featuring some of Iowa's most romantic venues.
Start your date in Ames with a tour of Rieman Gardens. During the summer you can literally stop and smell the roses together, with a display of the annual All-America winners. During the winter months, simply enjoying the waterfall in the conservatory and the butterfly garden will bring a touch of spring to your evening. For dinner, try Aunt Maude¡¯s, a romantic restaurant that has been an Ames tradition for over twenty years. Linger over your food, because you¡¯ll want to check out a wonderful tradition at Iowa State University. Students aren¡¯t considered official Iowa Staters until they have been kissed under the campanile clock tower during all twelve strokes of midnight, and they won¡¯t mind at all if you join them!
Just west of Ames in Boone, you can spend an enjoyable and unique evening together on the Dinner Train of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad. Fall rides are especially picturesque with the brilliant hues of autumn displayed in the lush rolling hills of the Des Moines River valley. Choose one of four entrees such as prime rib, salmon, chicken marsala or roast pork loin, but bring along your own bottle of wine ¨C the railroad is not licensed to sell or serve liquor. Reservations should be at least 7 days in advance for Friday or Saturday night trips.
Des Moines¡¯ Butler House on Grand was voted one of the most romantic B & B¡¯s in the country. The rambling Tudor home is in the Greenwood Park area near the Des Moines Art Center and Science Center of Iowa. Try dinner at Trostel¡¯s Greenbriar in nearby Johnston. Finish the evening with a moonlit walk at Grey¡¯s Lake. A quarter-mile long bridge featuring multicolored lighting makes the perfect spot to gaze together at the city lights reflected on the lake¡¯s surface.
If you happen to be in Des Moines during mid-August, the Iowa State Fair can also be a place to find romance, as well as more casual fun together. Start with a ride on Ye Olde Mill. This Iowa version of a tunnel of love has been a romantic fair tradition since 1921, and recently received a million dollar renovation. Catch an evening grandstand concert featuring shows as varied as the hottest country acts to a rock ¡®n¡¯ roll reunion. Then top off the evening with a ride on the double Ferris wheel. It will take your love to new heights!
Finally, visit the Bridges of Madison County, made famous by the romantic movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The film was shot in and near Winterset, and you can easily revisit many of the film locations as well as the bridges themselves. The couple ate a romantic picnic near a beautiful stone bridge, located in the Winterset City Park. Explore the park with its English hedge maze and two story limestone tower. And don¡¯t forget to stop into Ken¡¯s Northside Caf¨¦ on the square to share a piece of pie. |
