New York City is considered by many to be the premier city on the east coast and even the entire United States. Visitors cannot help but be amazed by the vibrant atmosphere, the hustle and bustle that characterize the city¡¯s avenues, the hundreds of restaurants, hundreds of thousands of residents, and the many things to do and see downtown and in the boroughs that surround Manhattan. Once you are in New York navigating the city is relatively easy. The city is structured around in a grid design, with avenues and streets. And while the city is large, getting from one end to another can be accomplished through a variety of means. Along with the many taxis, bus lines, and ferries, the city has an extensive subway system that extends into the boroughs as well. Getting around the city, for many, is a breeze, getting to the city, however, presents some challenges.
Driving to New York City is the preferred route for many travelers, particularly those who have a reserved spot or do not mind paying high rates for parking. Many hotels offer parking at a premium rate, many do not have parking facilities at all. If you are making reservations and are planning on driving to the city, be sure to call ahead and request information on parking at or near the hotel. Bus travel is a popular way of getting into the city. Bonanza bus, Greyhound, and other bus companies offer round trip services from major cities as well as smaller towns. There are other, lesser known companies who offer discount rates from cities as well. For instance, from Boston to New York there is a company that offers thirty dollar round-trip tickets from Chinatown Boston to Chinatown New York. Look online for these discounted companies.
Amtrak offers train service to and from New York. East coast cities that are serviced by Amtrak include major metropolitan centers such as Boston, Washington D.C, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Baltimore, and smaller towns like Newport, Hartford, Springfield. Amtrak can get you from the west coast as well, though it will take you a significantly longer time and more money. Ticket prices vary depending on departure location, time of departure, etcetera.
New York has several airports, the three main being John F. Kennedy Airport, La Guardia Airport, and Newark International Airport. All three airports offer frequent flights out to major metropolitan cities. Delta, in particular, offers shuttle services to cities such as Boston and Washington D.C. that run every hour on the hour to facilitate business men and women whose careers¡¯ necessitate frequent trips to the Big Apple.
Driving via car or bus, going by train, or hoping a flight are the most common ways of getting to New York, however if you find yourself on the coast of New Jersey you may opt to take the ferry into the city. Hoboken and Jersey City terminals offer transport for a roughly three dollars per trip. Monthly and yearly passes may be purchased as well.
