Everybody is familiar with the old clich¨¦ of the desperate gambler wagering the deed to his house in an attempt to win back the money he has lost during the course of an evening at a casino. It is doubtful any real casino would accept such a wager; however, as anybody who has been to Las Vegas can attest, it is easy to lose money, and lots of it, in just a few hours. However, there are tips and techniques that exist for the visitor to Las Vegas who wants to enjoy the casinos but doesn¡¯t want to lose his or her shirt. With a little preparation before you leave, a healthy attitude, knowledge of which games are the best to play, and how to play them, you will be on your way to having a responsible, fun, and (hopefully) profitable visit.
You can improve your chances of enjoying your Las Vegas experience even before you leave home, by understanding a few points before you leave. First, the casinos, over the long run, are going to make money. This is how they can afford to build multi-billion dollar palaces with everything from amusement parks to multi-million dollar art galleries inside of them. Second, gambling is not a way to make money. It is a mode of recreation, with the added bonus of a possibility of hitting the jackpot. If you keep these things in mind, you are already ahead of the game.
A second way to prepare for a trip to Las Vegas is to set yourself some guidelines regarding your gambling habits. Here is one way to think of it: if you went on a vacation to a resort in Florida, how much would you spend per day? How much on dining out? How much on drinks and entertainment? Estimate this cost and then allow yourself to spend that much, including gambling. Classy hotels, delicious food, and award-winning shows are abundant in Vegas, and can be found for very cheap. The casinos want you to stay in their facility, and many offer very reasonable packages which include show tickets or free dinners. And, as everybody knows, drinks are free in the casinos. The money you would have spent on these things vacationing elsewhere you can put into your gambling fund. Many people have found success by allowing themselves a certain amount of money to lose per day. Once that money is gone, stop gambling for the day. Browse in one of the art museums or go to one of the famous shows. There are certainly plenty of alternatives to the casinos in Las Vegas.
Another good idea is to explore different casinos, rather than just gambling at the
casino attached to your hotel. Different casinos offer different games, different crowds, and different betting minimums. If you¡¯re on a tight budget, a casino with a $25 minimum bet for a hand of blackjack might make for an ulcer-inducing evening of gambling. However, many of the smaller or older casinos offer much lower minimums, designed to draw the younger crowds. And while the Strip is the centerpiece of a Las Vegas visit, a trip to the old downtown can prove interesting and rewarding. Many of the casinos here offer better odds and extremely cheap, good buffets to lure gamblers off the Strip.
Once you are at the casino, there are some things to keep in mind to give yourself the best chance of winning. Again, as mentioned earlier, the casinos will always make money. It is mathematically impossible for this not to happen, as the casinos have designed all of the games to be in their favor. There are NO foolproof systems for ¡°beating the casinos,¡± and you should be skeptical of anybody telling you otherwise (especially if they are trying to sell it to you).
However, there are certain games in which the odds of your winning are better than others. These odds are determined by figuring, over the long run, how large of a percentage of every dollar wagered goes to the house. Some percentage will ALWAYS go to the house; this is how they stay in business. Whether that percentage comes from your dollar or somebody else¡¯s is where the luck and skill come in. For example, when played correctly, Craps, a high-paced, somewhat complicated dice game, provides the best odds for the gambler to beat the house. When played well, the odds are that less than 1% of money wagered goes to the house. Another game that provides better odds for the gambler is Blackjack, sometimes called 21. In this game the house¡¯s take is usually 2-3%. On the other hand, slot machines are not a high-odds game, despite their popularity, nor is Roulette (5-6%). And Keno, a number-picking game, is by far the worst, at 25% of all money wagered going to the casino. Of course, all of this is based on mathematical certainty, and depends on lots of money over a long period of time. In a short period of time, the odds will fluctuate. This is why gamblers sometimes win.
Although Blackjack and Craps are the two best bets, success depends on a knowledge of a basic playing strategy. These strategies have been devised by gamblers and oddsmakers over the years based on simple mathematics. There are many low-cost publications which detail these strategies, and they are easy to learn. It may be wise to familiarize yourself before you go, as gamblers (blackjack players especially) have been known to get rather irritated with novices at their table who ¡°ruin the deal.¡±
Las Vegas is one of the great American cities, frequently called a ¡°Disneyland for Adults.¡± With a little preparation beforehand, and responsible, skillful gambling while you are there, your trip to Las Vegas could be as spectacular as the lights of the famous Strip. |
