South America is one of the most diverse, yet least discussed, continents in the world.  Whether excitement, relaxation, culture, third world conditions, or luxurious European-like spas are your thing, South America offers something for everyone.

This article will briefly illustrate some of the best things to do in South America.  With a country so large and diverse, not every opportunity can be covered.  Hopefully this will be a good start to a life-changing experience.

A gentle, yet still authentic introduction is Argentina.  More than just flamenco dancing and fine steaks, capital Buenos Aires offers the best of South American culture and European flavor.  Sip coffee in a caf¨¦, watch a dance show, and just stroll the lovely streets.

Another way to explore the best of South America is to sign up for language school.  Popular in Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru, most schools offer lessons and a family homestay.  The best schools also offer side trips, dance and cooking classes, and cultural excursions.  Prices are cheapest in Peru and Ecuador, and some parts of Colombia are not advisable to travel in due to guerrilla activity.

La Paz, Bolivia is a hippie¡¯s dream come true.  The city is the highest capital in the world, at about 4,000 meters.  Besides its rich history and culture, a major draw is the Witches Market.  Vendors sell everything from spell books to llama fetuses.

Peru is an often-misunderstood country with a lot of worthwhile experiences to offer.  Home to Lake Titicaca, one of the most beautiful and navigable lakes in the world, the more physically-oriented traveler can hike and swim.  Others can view and be inspired by its beauty and history. Cuzco, with its Inca ruins, is another major draw, and well as the metropolis Lima.

The poverty seen in much of South America may disturb those from more Westernized nations.  Giving money should be carefully considered.  Locals usually reserve charity for those truly unable to work, such as the old, sick, and disabled.  Allowing a child to shine shoes is a way to help and encourage hard work and self-reliance.  As far as the journey goes, there are also many volunteer organizations one can join for a special experience.  Reading, teaching English, interning at newspapers and non-governmental organizations is a great way to expand personal growth, enjoy a new culture, and contribute to society.

There¡¯s so much more to do than what was mentioned.  Perhaps experience and more personal research will be another teacher.  It¡¯s possible for anyone, young or old, male or female, single or group, to have a safe, fun, and enriching travel experience.
