Joshua Tree National Park is less than ninety miles from the Western Arizona border on Highway 10. The Colorado River cuts through the California park which is set in both the Mojave Desert and the Little San Bernardino Mountains. Hiking is a popular way to get out of the car and explore the park¡¯s natural scenery and wildlife. Trails are found at many of the roadside pull-offs with different options for hikers of varying levels. A six mile trek from the road up to Keys View rewards hikers with a 5,185 foot high view of the Salton Sea. An easier hiking trail is three miles round trip to view the boulders above Ryan Mountain. Rock climbers will want to scale Joshua Tree National Park¡¯s massive granite formations. Scenic drives offer an effective way to traverse more of the park¡¯s changing landscapes in one day. For the opposite of wilderness, take a day trip to the bright lights of the big city. Las Vegas is a well-known quick get-away for Arizonans living near the Nevada border. Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
Another picturesque park near the Arizona border is Zion National Park, also in Utah. The Virgin River cuts through the park¡¯s sandstone mountains. The main visitor¡¯s center is located at the south entrance. The only food in the park is sold at the Zion Canyon Lodge.
