For those who live in Virginia, sometimes spending time away from familiar surroundings is the best way to spend the day. The Commonwealth borders on five states and the District of Columbia. What are some of the sites to see when traveling from Virginia on a day trip?
Washington D.C. The nation??s capital is filled with museums, parks and monuments. Located just north of Virginia, the District of Columbia is only hours away from most Virginia cities. Some travelers even opt to ride the subway system from northern Virginia into Washington.
Once in the capital, there is a plethora of activities to partake. A good starting point is the Lincoln Memorial. This memorial for the late President Abraham Lincoln was constructed in the 1920s and is also within walking distance of two other popular Washington D.C. destinations, the Washington Monument and Capitol Building. The statue is surrounded by thirty-six columns that represent the states at the time of his presidency. Of particular interest are the inscriptions of Lincoln??s infamous Gettysburg Address and his second Inaugural Speech.
The National Zoo, located off of Connecticut Avenue, is part of the Smithsonian Institute and is in the middle of Rock Creek Park. Visitors of all ages are treated to a variety of over 5,000 animals including the infamous giant pandas and native bison. The zoo is open everyday except for December 25th and admission is free.
Before leaving Washington D.C., a visitor should take time to tour the Navy Museum. This intriguing museum offers displays that showcase the history of the United States Navy from colonial times to present. Of particular interest are the various weapons and uniforms as well as the museum??s submarine room.
Maryland. The state of Maryland is located north of Virginia. One of Maryland??s top tourist destinations is Baltimore, just a few hours away from most major Virginian cities. Baltimore offers travelers a variety of historic and modern destinations sure to please a solo traveler or family.
A trip to the National Aquarium is sure to please the young and old alike. This pyramid shaped facility is located in Baltimore??s harbor and is home to over 15,000 sea creatures. Most visitors are in awe of the aquarium??s unique displays such as a replica of South America??s rain forest and the creature??s native to that area as well as reproductions of the ocean??s coral reef.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption is also located in Baltimore. Built in the early 1800s, the basilica is the oldest Catholic Church in America. Visitors to the basilica gather a greater appreciation for its historic architecture.
For travelers who like a touch of mystery, a trip to the Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum is in order. The former home of the famed writer is supposedly haunted by different ghosts. Visitors who are not paranormally inclined will still be able to view various displays of Poe??s including the author??s furnishings and desk.
West Virginia. Another day trip from Virginia can also include a visit to the neighboring state of West Virginia. Although it was once part of the Commonwealth, West Virginia became its own independent state in 1863. Today, nature enthusiasts flock to the state for its pristine parks and mountainous regions as well as its various cities.
A trip to the state capital of Charleston is fun for the entire family. If a traveler is looking for a scenic tour of the area, a ride along the Elk River Scenic Drive is in order. The drive is approximately 60 miles and runs from Charleston to the northeastern town of Sutton.
If a person is more apt for adventure, he or she may opt to go whitewater rafting. Many businesses throughout Charleston offer guided tours along the New River and Gauley River. Travelers can choose to go rafting, fishing, tubing or fishing.
For more outdoors fun, a person can visit Coonskin Park in Charleston. A variety of activities is open for the entire family. Children will have fun swimming and pedal boating while adults enjoy an 18-hole golf course and hiking.
North Carolina. The state of North Carolina is found along the southeastern border of Virginia. North Carolina??s capital, Charlotte, is located a couple of hours away from many locations in Virginia.
One of the top family destinations in Charlotte is Carowinds. Many travelers plan their day trips around a visit to this unique theme park. Kids and adults of all ages enjoy a variety of thrill rides and games that span over 100 acres.
If a trip to a theme park isn??t in order, a person may want to spend the day in nearby Concord. Located just outside of Charlotte, Concord is the home of Concord Mills Mall. This extraordinary mall is unique not only in the stores located in the vicinity but the numerous activities that a person or family can partake in.
One of the closest cities to the border of Virginia is Greensboro, North Carolina. It??s not unusual for a person or family in nearby Danville, Virginia to plan a day trip here. The city offers various park and recreation areas, entertainment facilities and even boasts a local hockey museum.
Tennessee. Not many states can boast the natural beauty of Tennessee. Virginians living in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth can easily plan a day trip to many of the sites in Tennessee.
One of the more popular travel destinations is the growing region of Pigeon Forge. Located in the heart of the Smokey Mountains, Pigeon Forge has much to offer every traveler. Visitors can partake in local cuisine at a nearby restaurant, watch one of the many family oriented live shows are visit the infamous Dollywood theme park.
While visiting Pigeon Forge, travelers will want to stop in nearby Gatlinburg. A variety of shops line the streets of this mountain city. Shoppers will delight in finding shops with music, local attire or even a haunted house or two as they walk the length of the town.
