As any Colorado resident will tell you, Colorado is one of the best places to live.  There¡¯s the vibrant city of Denver, as well as easy access to the mountains and foothills.  Whether you¡¯re a Colorado native looking for something different to do this weekend, or just visiting and looking for some adventure, try one of these day trips for a memorable day in Colorado.

Trip #1:  Take the train

If the weather is nice and you feel like spending some time in the mountains, head up to Georgetown, a small mountain community located 45 miles west of Denver.  To get there, head out on I-70 west and follow the signs to Georgetown.  Like most small mountain towns, Georgetown has its fair share of mom-and-pop shops that feature local artists and decadent candy and ice cream.  However, the main attraction is the Georgetown Loop Railroad, featuring a train that runs for 12 miles through the Royal Gorge.  The view is spectacular, especially in the fall.  After riding the train, head into town for some homemade ice cream at one of the local shops, and enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery while sitting on one of the many curbside benches.

Trip #2:  Hiking and shopping

One the true natural wonders of Colorado is Rocky Mountain National Park.  Located 65 miles northwest of Denver, the park¡¯s main entrance is located in Estes Park, a small town with a bustling tourist industry.  Buy a park pass for the day or weekend, and head out on the local trails.  Trails maps can be purchased from park rangers, or from many stores in town.  Estes Park has a number of small artisan shops that feature local artists, and is known for having a number of small festivals throughout the year.  On your way out of town, stop at the large indoor flea market for a bit of treasure hunting.

Trip #3:  Visit a grand canyon

Although the ¡°real¡± Grand Canyon is in Arizona, Colorado boasts the impressive Black Canyon of the Gunnison near Gunnison, a small college town in southwestern Colorado.  Although Gunnison is located 200 miles southwest of Denver and requires crossing the mountains to be reached, the Black Canyon is well worth the drive.  Unlike the Grand Canyon, whose walls are set far apart from each other, the Black Canyon has steep walls set relatively close together, which give an impressive vertical view of the river below.  After marveling at the canyon¡¯s grandeur, stop in town for a homespun meal at any of the locally owned restaurants, which often use meat from local cattle for their burgers and steaks.

Trip #4:  Visit the cliffs

Another day trip to southwest Colorado that offers a more historical perspective is a visit to Mesa Verde National Park, which features cliff dwellings from native communities that existed from the late 1200s A.D.  Although the park has been plagues with fires the last few years, the clearing of brush has actually revealed several previously undiscovered dwellings that were revealed by the fires.  Mea Verde is open year-round, allowing for visits during the winter off-season for tourism.  Mesa Verde is located in Cortez, a small town 35 miles west of Durango.  If you have time for more than a day trip, consider spending a day at Mesa Verde and a day at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for a truly spectacular weekend.
