Atlanta, Georgia is home to many attractions of its own, but it's also a great starting point for many day trips around the area. By driving only 100 miles or less in any direction, one can find many wonderful places to visit and be back home or at your hotel in Atlanta before bedtime. The following locations are less than 100 miles from Atlanta and offer many different types of events for visitors to enjoy. 

The Shields-Etheridge Historical Farm is only 50 miles northeast of Atlanta in Jefferson, Georgia. The farm is on the National Register of Historic Places. They offer seminars and tours that feature the restored outbuildings of the original farm. Tours must be arranged by appointment. The farm consists of over 150 acres and was originally established in the 1800s. Today it is an educational facility and museum. There is an annual "Mule Day" that includes demonstrations of farm equipment and animals. 

Dahlonega, Georgia is in the foothills of the north Georgia mountains, only 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. Dahlonega was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States. The major attractions of Dahlonega are the gold mines. Two mines are open for tours. The Consolidated Gold Mines offer tours from actual miners that can answer all your questions as you view the mine tunnels. The Crisson Gold Mine is open for tours and gold panning. You can pan for gold or "grub" for gems such as rubies, emeralds and garnets. Dahlonega also offers many sites for nature lovers, such as the Dicks Creek and Cane Creek waterfalls and recreation such as hiking, rafting, horseback riding and mountain biking. 

Warm Springs, Georgia is located about 60 miles southwest of the south side of Atlanta. Warm Springs is home to several small antique shops and locally owned restaurants. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited Warm Springs often for polio treatment. He built a home in the area that is now called the Little White House. His Little White House is now a museum. Just up the hill from the town of Warm Springs is the FDR State Park that offers hiking trails and horseback riding. Warm Springs offers a new reason to visit each season. In the fall merchants in town hold the Harvest Hoe Down, featuring arts, crafts, music and food. During the Christmas holidays the town is decorated in lights and candles and shops have extended weekend hours. Springtime brings the Spring Fling Festival and features woodworking, arts and crafts, and children's games. Summer brings the Fourth of July celebration and features children's games and live entertainment with a fireworks display at nearby Lake Meriwether. 

Macon, Georgia is located approximately 80 miles south of Atlanta. Macon has over 200,000 cherry trees and celebrates the blossoms each spring at the Cherry Blossom Festival. Macon has many museums and historical homes to visit, such as the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and the Cannonball House, a Confederate Museum. Walking tour brochures can be found at the Macon-Bibb County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Visitor's Bureau offers information on many types of tours, such as a civil war themed tour or a trolley tour of the historic downtown area. 

There are many interesting places to visit that are one or two hours away from Atlanta, Georgia. Day trips from the city can allow visitors and locals to the area to enjoy new experiences such as panning for gold or learn something new by visiting a civil war museum and nearby cemetery. One doesn't need to drive a long way to see some of the best cities that Georgia has to offer.
