The beautiful country of France offers many opportunities for day travelers to plan some fabulous excursions.
Paris, the "city of lights," certainly would normally take more than a day to see everything it has to offer, but for the day traveler, sites to visit in a short block of time would be the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre Museum.
The Eiffel Tower has admittances to use the steps until midnight for a short time in the summer, but all other final admittance times are 6:00 p.m. for the steps. The elevator, however, has late evening admission times year round. Make reservations for one of the restaurants in the tower for an unforgettable experience. Shopping and dining are also available in the tower, as well as a bird's eye view from the top. Many visitors insist on doing this "tour to the top" in the evening when the city of lights will certainly live up to its name.
Visiting the Louvre Museum will take most of a day in order to see the treasures that are housed there. Be sure to check on the temporary exhibits and collections as well as those that are permanent, including the Mona Lisa. The museum opens its doors at 9 a.m. every day except Tuesday, when it is always closed to the public. The entrance to the building is found at the huge pyramid.
Construction of the world renowned Notre Dame Cathedral started in the middle of the 12th century (1163 to be exact). A tour of this Gothic-style building is a good activity for a day trip to Paris. The cathedral is open to visitors, but be sure to know if it will be accessible at the time you plan to be in the area for your day trip. Mass is also still offered here numerous times per day.
If you are sharing the day and excursion with children, there is a zoo in Paris that will provide a day of fun. If there is some spare time, Paris also hosts parks and museums that will be of interest to children. Disneyland Paris is also located here, but that is an attraction that will take your entire day. If you have already been to the other sites of interest in the city, Disneyland will be a good choice and a lot of fun, but a tiring day!
Another idea for a day trip in France is the Vieux Port (meaning "old port.") It is found in Marseille and is often a stop for cruises that are in the area. There are many restaurants from which to choose a meal at Vieux Port. Marseille is a good place for shopping and sightseeing and there are some ruins here called Jardin des Vestiges, meaning "garden of remains." This area was a loading dock in the ancient days.
For a day trip to Cannes, travelers will be finding many of the streets filled with fine shops. A huge outdoor market is found at Cannes as well. It is called the Forville Market and the vendors sell produce of all kinds. Cannes is a popular area for movie theaters, other theaters, and clubs, too. Cannes is found in the French Riviera region.
If your day trip is taking you to the Toulouse area of France, the science museum here is called Cite de L'Espace. The museum offers many activities and tours, and a planetarium.
If getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life sounds exciting, then a trip to one of the mountains found at Aix-en-Provence should be put onto the agenda. Whether a visitor wants to spend a day hiking, nature watching, or simply relaxing in the mountain air, Mount Saint Victoire can provide a day of fun, exercise, or relaxation. If some time remains, check out the shops and cafes in Aix. The Annecy region is where La Tournette Mountain and Semnoz Mountains are found.
To spend some time by the waterside instead of the mountains, the Nice area (French Riviera) offers beaches by the Mediterranean. For divers, an interesting attraction here is the underwater statue of the Virgin Mary. It is called Our Lady of the Seabed and it joins other submerged works of art at this popular diving spot.
A specialized day trip within France might take a traveler to one or two of the many castles dotting the countryside of France. The Loire Valley is a good place to start if seeing the castles is part of your agenda. It is always a good idea, especially for a day trip, to do research ahead of time. This is a good example to support that. There are many castles in the Loire Valley, and it is a good idea to know which ones you care to visit before arriving in the area. This allows the day tripper to use the short time of the visit in the best way possible. Some of the castles rent out guest rooms, others provide tours, and some are not even open for tours but are a fantastic photo opportunity all the same. |
