A road trip can be a fun and exciting getaway from the norm, and not all of them require your vacation time! There are many places within easy reach from Ontario, whether you are in the west or east, north or south.
The southern area is where Toronto, the capital of Ontario, and Ottawa, the capital of Canada, are located. Any estimated trip times given will be from one of these two cities.
The Greater Toronto Area is an attraction in itself. Canada's largest city is far too much to ever explore in a day, but it has some great attractions for both casual and regular visitors. Canada's Wonderland, in the northern suburb of Vaughan, is Canada's largest theme park and is a great place to take children for the day. Near that area is the largest water park, Wild Water Kingdom, which is also worth a trip. In metro Toronto, Chinatown is a popular attraction, as are the Toronto Islands in the southernmost area of the city. And of course, when visiting Toronto, a trip to the CN Tower cannot be missed: the view of the city from the top is well worth the expense and heavy tourist traffic.
90 minutes from Toronto, Blue Mountain Ski Resort is a year-round facility for lovers of action. In winter, ski and snowboard on the 720-foot mountain; in summer, hike it and enjoy the shops, spas, swimming and sailing at the all-purpose resort. Mountain biking and golfing facilities are available as well as live music and entertainment in the busy clubs.
Perhaps the best-known and most popular trip to make in Ontario is to Niagara Falls. Although it is only about 100 miles from Toronto, the busy highways can make the trip take 2-3 hours, or more on the weekend or during 5 o'clock traffic. Still, it is worth the drive and the horrendous parking schemes in the area. Niagara houses not only the breathtaking Falls but several other attractions, such as the Hershey Chocolate Factory, Marineland, the Guinness Book of World Records Museum, the Rock Legends Wax Museum, and the Skylon Tower. The Falls themselves can be viewed from the Canadian or American sides of the city, and even from a chartered boat on Lake Ontario itself. A day trip to Niagara, though within easy driving range for most of the province, will likely consume your day and is the most highly recommended area to visit.
Moving further out of the province, several cities are within reach of most of Ontario, a few of them over the United States border. Sault Ste-Marie, the Michigan "border town", boasts the Soo Locks (waterways that can be opened and closed), the Valley Camp Museum, and Brady Park. South of Niagara is New York State and the city of Buffalo, featuring tourist attractions like Fantasy Island, Six Flags Darian Lake, dozens of art galleries and several casinos. Take a hot-air balloon ride over Niagara Falls or visit the Buffalo Zoological Gardens from here.
In the neighboring province of Qu¨¦bec, the two major cities are close enough for a day trip, depending on where in Ontario you are located. A little over two hours away from Ottawa is Montr¨¦al, home of Montr¨¦al Tower and Olympic Park, St. Joseph's Oratory, fine restaurants, cruises, and more. Five hours from Ottawa, Qu¨¦bec City is a breathtakingly beautiful place for a visit, and although largely French-speaking, there is no need to worry about finding your way around. A section of the city called Vieux de Qu¨¦bec (Old Qu¨¦bec) preserves the history of the area, including the famous Ch?teau Frontenac and a boardwalk overlooking the harbor. Quaint shops and popular chains of stores are intermixed in this area, but the buildings all retain an old-fashioned appearance.
Ontario is within easy reach of dozens of interesting parks, cities, campgrounds and more--far too many to list. Perhaps the best way to find the lesser-known ones is to explore different areas yourself. If you live within driving range, however, these major attractions are not only worth going to see, but inexcusable to miss. Enjoy your trip! |
