There are many fun day trips within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Some of these trips cross the state border if you are close enough to do so, but most are found within state borders.
For travelers who do indeed wish to cross the border, a day trip from the eastern part of the state, such as the Philadelphia area can easily involve a drive to the ocean. Atlantic beach areas such as Cape May and Wildwood, New Jersey, are only about ninety miles from Philadelphia.
A day of shopping or seeing a broadway show in New York City is also less than a hundred miles from Philadelphia and slightly further from points west such as the Pocono area.
From south central Pennsylvania, such as the Gettysburg area, Washington DC is only 85 miles away and a day trip full of sightseeing, museum hopping, fine dining, or seeing the many monuments in the nation's capital awaits.
Many enjoyable day trips are found within the state borders, however. In Philadelphia, visit the Franklin Institute, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, or one of the city's many museums. For a different kind of museum experience, stop by the National Park Service-run Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site. Poe lived here for six years and penned some of his best works from within these walls. Note that the site is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
In central Pennsylvania, day trips to Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Hershey, and Lancaster offer many things to do. Try the State Museum at Harrisburg as well as the National Civil War Museum. A stop at the home of Harrisburg's minor league baseball team, the Senators, is also a good choice. The park offers jogging, biking, horse drawn carriage rides, a steam train, miniature golf and paddlewheel boat rides. (Boat rides are only in operation from June through August).
Gettysburg is best seen over a span of two or more days, but a day trip there is possible and enjoyable with some pre-planning. There is an auto tour route that can be followed, and the longer of the two possible tours is a three-hour route. That leaves plenty of time for a meal and some shopping while in town for the day. Both tours take visitors to the major battle sites and monuments. Many markers and dedication monuments tell the story of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the tours allow plenty of time for stopping and leaving the vehicle to read the markers. This allows visitors to truly get a feel for what happened here in July of 1863.
Hershey is a fun day trip any time of year. See how the chocolate is made at Hershey's Chocolate World and shop for chocolate gifts at their gift shop. There is a museum for even more chocolate trivia and fun called the Hershey Museum. ZooAmerica is located in Hershey and worth a stop if you have any time left on your day trip. However, to enjoy Hershey fully, you will want to plan your trip here during the summer months most likely, when Hershey Park is in operation.
The same advice applies to visiting Lancaster for the day if the theme park Dutch Wonderland is on the agenda. If it is the lifestyle of the Amish that prompts the trip, any time of the year would be a great time to visit Lancaster. There is a living history museum in Lancaster called Landis Valley that shows what life was like for the settlers to the region. There are some Amish home tours and buggy rides also. Don't forget to stop for an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch meal while in the area! If there is an extra hour or so, stop by nearby Ephrata. This town houses an 18th century German religious community called the Ephrata Cloister that is open for tours.
A day trip in western Pennsylvania could be to Pittsburgh. Among the many things for visitors to see and do are the National Aviary, the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, or the Andy Warhol Museum. There are many museums in the city, and some great parks for various types of recreation. Spend some time by the water here. Pittsburgh is where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together on the way to forming the Ohio River.
Scranton is another destination choice for a day trip. This Pocono Mountain region city is situated in one of Pennsylvania's coal mining areas, and in addition to a coal mine tour, there is an Anthracite Heritage Museum. Also in the area, visitors will find the ski resort area called Montage Mountain for winter fun. Be sure to stop at the Steamtown Railroad for a steam engine ride.
For a totally outdoor day trip, try the Pine Creek Gorge near Wellsboro. Also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, the gorge runs nearly fifty miles in length and is more than fourteen hundred feet deep. It is found within the Tioga State Forest. Any time of year is good for seeing this area, but the fall months with the colored leaves offer especially spectacular views. Take a picnic along with you, and you will want a camera as well, for the scenery including beautiful waterfalls. Activities found around the gorge are rafting and canoeing, fishing, riding horses, and covered wagon rides. |
