Some of the most beautiful resorts in all of the Caribbean call St. Lucia their home. The beautiful white sand beaches and mountainous terrain make St. Lucia a popular vacation destination. Located in the Caribbean between St. Vincent and Martinique, almost half of the entire population of St. Lucia lives in its capitol, Castries. This is also the place where a majority of tourists head for their fun in the sun. If you are one of the many people who chose to make St. Lucia your choice for a vacation, then you are in for a fantastic trip. Don¡¯t get discouraged if you haven¡¯t got a clue about what to do once you get there; follow this top ten list and you¡¯ll be on your way to experiencing Castries before you¡¯ve even gotten on the plane.
10. Take in a little history at Fort Charlotte.
Today, Fort Charlotte is home to government offices but you can still see the sables, cells, and a guardroom. Also in Fort Charlotte is the Inniskilling Monument, erected in homage to an 1876 battle that took place here.
9. Visit the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
This Roman Catholic Church was built in 1897, and was visited by the pope in 1995. Colorful murals enliven the inside of this holy palace.
8. Catch Some Rays at Vigie Beach.
This 1.5-mile stretch of powdery Caribbean sand leaves plenty of opportunity for sunbathing and relaxing.
7. See if you can catch the one that got away.
Stop by Captain Mike¡¯s on Vigie Cove and rent a boat to test your angling abilities. Species found in the St. Lucian waters include: mackerel, barracuda, kingfish and marlin. Even though fishing is done on a catch-and-release basis, you¡¯ll still have fun and test your skills.
6. Stock up on souvenirs at Pointe Serafine.
This duty free shopping center in the center of Castries houses many of the nicer boutiques in the area.
5. Enjoy French food at The Coal Pot restaurant.
This restaurant is quite small (only 10 tables) but has some of the best food on the island. Experience fresh seafood prepared with a Creole-French twist.
4. Go take a hike.
The Barre de L¡¯Isle Trail is a short drive away from Castries in almost the center of St. Lucia but it is worth the trip. Since a large part of St. Lucia is rainforest, you will get to see much of the landscape of the area on this roughly one-hour hike. Lookout points along the way provide views of where the Atlantic and the Caribbean oceans meet.
3. Take a trip to Rodney Bay.
About 15 minutes away from Castries, this man-made lagoon is home to a number of shops and restaurants to explore. Rodney Bay is a top Yachting port-of-call, with an excellent marina.
2. Catch the dinner show at the Green Parrot.
Watch your host ¡°Chef Harry¡± and several other performers entertain you as you enjoy dinner and a panoramic view of Castries.
1. Soak up local Culture at the Castries Market.
This lively, colorful town square is always full of people and excitement, except on Sundays when the market is closed. For over a hundred years farmers have been bringing their produce and wares to the market on Saturday mornings and it is truly a site to behold. Make sure to sample a ¡°real¡± banana and see what your cereal has been missing all these years. Next to the produce market is a crafts market where you can purchase handiworks produced by local artisans.
No matter how you decide to spend your time in Castries, St. Lucia, one thing is certain: you¡¯re in for lots of fun and excitement. From beautiful beaches to bustling town squares St. Lucia¡¯s capital city has much to share with visitors.
