Situated along the southern coast of the Dominican Republic lies the seaside town of La Romana. The beautiful countryside was what caused Christopher Columbus to proclaim, ¡°There is no more beautiful island in all of the world...¡± or so the story goes. La Romana is quickly gaining appeal as a vacation destination it its own right. If you decide to plan a trip to this island oasis, there are a few attractions that you should make sure to see during your stay.

La Romana was a relatively quiet area that thrived on sugarcane production and cattle rising. Then, Gulf and Western Industries came into the picture and decided to develop the area and capitalize on the beautiful surroundings. The result: Casa de Campo, the largest and most exquisite resort on the island. 

Casa de Campo is a 7,000-acre resort with as many areas to explore as there are activities to occupy your time. If you are a golf enthusiast, then Casa de Campo is right up your alley. Here you will find three of the Dominican Republic finest gold courses. The Teeth of the Dog course has seven holes that run along the coast of the Caribbean. The Links is an island course that was patterned after the famous courses of Scotland. The third course at Casa de Campo is the La Romana Country Club, more popular amongst local residents than guests of the resort. If golf isn¡¯t your strong suit then Casa de Campo also has tennis courts, trail riding, sport fishing, skeet shooting, and numerous water sports to choose from. Or, if you decide to do nothing at all, the resort has beaches and pools for you to enjoy. 

Another popular tourist attraction in La Romana is Altos de Chavon. Built on the grounds of Casa de Campo, this replica of a 16th century Mediterranean Village has much to offer guests. Walking trough the cobble stone streets and examining the architecture of a bygone era, visitors may be surprised to learn that it was actually constructed in the 1970¡¯s. More than just a re-creation, Altos de Chavon is also an artist¡¯s colony, museum, church, amphitheater and art gallery. You can buy ceramics and other crafts that were produced on the grounds by local craftsman. Or, perhaps you will be lucky enough to catch a show in the amphitheater. Artists such as Frank Sinatra and Carlos Santana have performed here.

If you¡¯d prefer to see the sites under the water there are a few options in La Romana to tempt you. About one and a half miles off the coast is the Eastern National Park. One popular choice is Sanoa Island. This area can be reached by boat from La Romana and is part of the National Underwater Park system. Sanoa is a protected area, and in addition to numerous types of undersea corals and aquatic life, you might be able to observe turtles, sharks, whales and large fish. 

Whether you decide to keep you feet firmly planted on the ground at Casa de Campo or to dive below the surface at Sanoa, La Romana has much to offer in the way of tourist attractions. No matter what you choose, you will have many fond memories of your explorations in La Romana.
