The Great Washington, D.C. Restaurants of Today

Once upon a time in the 80's of Washington, D.C. it was fashionable to been seen and to see the elite rubbing elbows at the Watergate or Red, Hot & Blue.  Now restaurants like Oya, Cloud Dining Lounge, Black Salt, H2O, and Sequoia are infusing a modern trend into the old city and dictating the way the power of the country eats.

Oya Restaurant & Lounge located on 9th Street NW is a nod to DC¡¯s attempt to become a hipper locale.  A West Coast flavor has seeped into this wonderful building with its nod to chic simplicity.  The walls are covered in white marble and the chairs, banquettes and couches in white leather.  The wait staff is covered in bright orange and the walls in fire.  This place has a thoroughly modern flavor to its decor and its menu.  With tastes blended together from Asia, Morocco, West Africa and the West Indies, you¡¯re sure to find something you weren¡¯t expecting.  The management has created some wonderful tastes including: braised short ribs served with vanilla pear puree and fried plantains; grilled green curry lobster with red rice; beef skewers with rum molasses glaze and sushi style ¡°O¡± rolls of salted cod, sake cucumber and jerk salmon with avocado.  The desserts are just as inviting with banana bread pudding with rum raisin ice cream and pineapple baked Alaska.

Over on MacArthur Boulevard, Black Salt has taken seafood to the next level by creating a restaurant and market experience.  The restaurant is located in a residential part of the city and displays merrily a raw bar, small-plates menu and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs use the wood-burning grill and smoker to their advantage.  Creations like fried calamari, wood-grilled sardines and shrimp bisque are expected in this wonderfully busy atmosphere, however, you can bet you weren¡¯t expecting to find mussels served in so many different ways and seafood stews to write home about.  Tantalizing plates filled with monkfish wrapped in prosciuto and pan-seared scallops bathed in crawfish butter tempt you from the moment you walk in the door.  Happy endings are served happily if you have the room with the delights of key lime bombe and chocolate peanut butter crunch cake.

DuPont Circle is known for many things, but one very plain looking building holds Washington, D.C.¡¯s newest treasure, Cloud Dining Lounge.  Tapas of tuna served in a coconut shell, smoked salmon potato cakes with green olive vinaigrette and roasted peppers with goat cheese, raisins and pine nuts, fill the menu and make this a pleasant diversion from every day fair.  The interior is dotted with sheer white curtains, white couches and black and while chairs around tables that seemingly glow in the dark.  Faux leather beds with fluffy pillows invite a more relaxed atmosphere and take a cue from New York and Miami¡¯s bed trend.  This lounge is dedicated more to the club scene than the dinner scene and pull you off the beaten path with cocktails called Cloud 9 and the Star of India both pulling together the unusual to pull you back in.

Sequoia is DC¡¯s favorite spot to see and be seen.  It has flair with the young professionals running the city as well as attracting the old timers from Georgetown and tourists.  The high ceilings provide a spacious atmosphere with its¡¯ warm lighting and cherry wood tables.  Spectacular floor to ceiling windows offer views of the Potomac River, trees dotted with lights and bronze tables and chairs for outside patrons.   The menu is filled with the American flavors we all love with burgers, crab cakes, rack of lamb and duck.  

Finally, H2O puts the waterfront back on the map.  The former Hogate¡¯s restaurant was redone in late 2003 and reopened as H2O.  Names like P. Diddy, Natalie Portman and Bill Clinton have made this building a celebrity magnet on Water Street SW.  The interior is more like a cruise ship than a landlocked building with its dark wood, large patios and views of the Potomac River.  Wonderful circular booths with low lighting creates an intimate feel to linger over dinners of rum buns, cod, lobster, shrimp, scallop, oysters, clams and crabs.  On weekends, the dining room makes way for a dance floor that brings in the celebrities and the young professionals looking for an escape.  International Fridays and Soul Food Saturdays highlight music from around the globe and create long lines that cannot be avoided in this trendy hot spot.

When men like Regan and Bush ran the country it was restaurants like Red, Hot & Blue and the Watergate where the deals were made.  Now its places like Sequoia, H2O, Merkado, Cloud Dining Lounge and Black Salt where not only the young and powerful show up but the celebrities and seniors do too.
